I've also started working on the Ship Management screen, which displays information about the ship and allows control over some of the inner workings. Crew and upgrades aren't implemented yet, but the "Overview" tab displays the ship (and is smart enough to center it regardless of where on the grid you built it), and shows tooltips with information about the system you hover over. To demonstrate the coloring and stat penalty system, I randomized the HP values for the second image.
Yeah, it's nothing huge, but it's a step in the right direction. As you can probably guess by the version number in the top right, I'm planning to release smaller, preparatory updates before making the final leap of the combat system.
I saw a document on future colonization or space or something, and it showed how space dogfights would be more like zig-zagging and random movements, rather than straight-flying aerial dogfights, like they are depicted in Homeworld or Freespace. Even Star Wars. Maybe you want to focus on realism. Like,
