I think the best thing to do is to try the name like that but most of the time, the domain name is already taken ... and more often than not... taken AND unused... which is the situation for the name of the company and my own nick [flaming].

But that's a question I have been asking myself lately as well as my comrades on what would be a proper website name if the shortest and most obvious name is already taken ... and I really think that a long name is not a good thing. For our part, we decided to go with www.silverfoxsoft.com temporarily until we whup the ass of the guy who owns silverfox.com or we change the name of the company. You are free to go look at it if you want but it's really ugly and not updated since we don't use it yet :P

No seriously that would be a good thing to look for... the best possible name for a website. I still havent had a chance to read that file that The Reindeer Effect posted but I got it so I will be checking it out as soon as I can.
Avenyr, SilverFox isn't that bad of a name, 2-3 weeks to come up with it you say? I've been working on my company's name for far longer, and am no closer to selecting a name then I was several months ago, but anyway, when I think of SilverFox, the impression I get is, intellegent, and quick, and stealthy(?)

Anyway, I have some experiences, tales to tell relating to this but, I belive that it would be better for me to wrap this up, because I will, un-doubtedly end up miles off topic, so contact me if you'd like to hear them.

It should be good enough where you could tattoo it on to yourself.

If you actually *DO* tattoo it onto yourself theres the added benefit of proving to your friends how hardcore you are.

I did.[grin]

throw table_exception("(? ???)? ? ???");

Well I don't think I'd be hardcore enough to get it tattooed but I was definitely thinking of getting T-Shirts made with the company logo whenever the name and logo would be decided definitely.

I'm already thinking about it... walking around with the shirt of my very own company that would be cool even though nobody would actually have a clue of what SilverFox is in the early days [grin]

A name should represent your company, your employees and the product its manufacturing. Of course, you can't just arbitrarily name your company.

When I think of "SilverFox Software" I see a company that produces games like Solitaire, Chess, etc... Slow games meant for old men (my dad plays Solitaire all day).
The second thing that bothers me about this name is the word Software right there. You're not making just any Software like Microsoft, you're making games. Your speciality is games. You should change that. A word like "studio" fits perfectly. A studio isn't a big place, but its connotations are various.

It is said that products coming out of a studio are often carefully polished and refined. Whenever an imperfection is found, the technicians will spend hours to fix it, until the product is perfect. Someone seeing that name should feel that. The feeling is important.

When I see SilverFox, the feelings aren't that great. Sounds boring too. It's like calling a heavy metal band "geezer".

A name should be short and simple.

Good examples are id software, 3drealms, epic games.

How ironic. I see "silver" as new, fast, technology, and I see "fox" as quick, sly, nature. =)
Personally, I hate naming things. And figure the name of the company isn't really relevant. The quality of the products your release will be what defines the identity of the company in the long run.

Now, when you start talking about product names, that is a whole different matter. The name there can be critical.

(And hating naming things, I named my company after the creek that ran through my back yard....)

Personally I think it's never too early to pick a name & matching logo. As soon as you have a website you are going to need it to create recognition and branding. The name I picked for my company (Lone Wolves) actually comes from the term "Lone Wolf Programmer" i.e. a programmer that does a project all by himself. The company began as a couple of these lone wolves that were each doing their own stuff under a collective name to get better branding, recognition and exposure.
