What would be an average cost of a .com?

Also. if we are unable to get it, would a “-” in the name make that much of a difference?

or getting a .co be good enough?

How do you know this? I register my names the week before they expire. Lots of people do.

I called Go daddy and looked on Who is.

If the original owners don't renew. which it is unlikely.

It says the people who have it went out of business.

I always make sure my names have either 0 results on google, or barely any (which also makes them cheap). I wouldn't want to use a name someone already used.

Early on in my career, I used a name I thought sounded good and bought the domain for it, only to realize that another company was using the name. I realized after a while that In a couple articles written about them, the people writing the articles actually confused us, and thought we were the same company/entity.
