NEW VERSION CREATED LATE 2017 HERE.

As this topic is quite dated, and now contains a number of broken links, we have created a newer replacement version with updated material and the broken stuff removed.  Please check out the links there and update any incoming links to this topic to point there. :)

aka Sprites, sprites, and more sprites! redux. This is a list of free graphics for games. These aren't just restricted to sprites and 2d graphics, 3d is great too (I just don't know of very much). Know of any more good sites? I'll add in suggestions! And frankly I need suggestions, because this list could be much better. [Do note that I'm not especially comfortable with linking to sprites ripped from commercial games that have not been specifically released by their creator(s); I'm looking at you, Megaman sprites.]

First Seed Material

A nice and complete set of graphics for low-resolution games. It was originally designed for RPG Maker 2000, but the license does not restrict its use to that software. The site is mostly in Japanese, but all important stuff (the graphic descriptions, the license, etc.) are available in English.

Great list, thanks for putting it together!

Be careful if you decide to use Spritelib GPL, I was reading the fine print and the licensing is very confusing. The title says GPL, then the description says it's CPL, but then it says that you can't sell it (which goes against the GPL and CPL), and it also says that you can't distribute it in a game dev tool without written permission (also going against the GPL and CPL). Very odd.
thanks a lot

http://commons.wikimedia.org/ can be a useful source too - obviously less suited for games, but you can be guaranteed it's all under free licences.

http://www.jamendo.com/ - plenty of music under Creative Commons

http://www.freesound.org/ - sounds, Creative Commons

http://free-loops.com - includes many sounds under Creative Commons

Yeah, I've come across some like this, where they say it's under a free licence, but then elsewhere say something that contradicts the licence. It's very annoying when people do this :( http://www.lovetextures.com which I list above is even worse, it says it's under Creative Commons, but then says "The only exception is that you do not redistribute, sell or host any of the photography" which suggests no distribution is allowed whatsoever (possibly they just mean that they don't want people distributing them as "stock" images, but it's unclear).

Hi there,

I`m the admin of Reiner`s Tilesets. My webspace has changed. And with that the URL.The link above leads to the subdomain of my ex hoster. And so it becomes invalid in the next days. My new URL is http://www.reinerstilesets.de/

Maybe somebody of the admins can fix the link in the first post so that there is no dead link in the list :)
