"Your_mortgage_payments.rar" dodgy ad file
Does this ad company check for malware at all???
(Moderator edit: possibly dangerous link deleted)
Guys, I was browsing the forums here, in gamedev, and suddenly a window popped up and asked me if I want to save the file: Your_mortgage_payments.rar, and I clicked "enter" by mistake. I'm afraid to extract the .rar but I'm thinking of opening the file in a sandbox. Nevermind. If you see such a file, do NOT download it.

Exactly this happened to me! As soon as I whitelisted gamedev.net in adblock, this pop-up appeared immediately, because of the timing I instinctively assumed it was a sort of gamedev verification and I clicked ok(or yes), then it started downloading, and when it finished it downloaded again and again. At one point I had up to 5 or 6 of the .rar file in my download folder. I just deleted them and also deleted from the recycle bin
Hope no damage was done to my HD , because it wasn't too long that i did a full repair and it cost me a lot .So fingers crossed
If gamedev, understandably, want none GDNet+ to not use adblockers then gamedev should sort this out ASAP. I'm not going to lose my laptop to malware again because I'm here???
can't help being grumpy...
Just need to let some steam out, so my head doesn't explode...
Unfortunately Gamedev.net don't have direct control over the adverts that get served, as far as I am aware. They can report bad ones, but ad serving is quite complex these days.
Screenshot or description of the ad itself is required.
Not saying I don't believe you because anything is possible, but we are very strict on our ad selections.

Not strict enough. Good thing I don't make any payments from my laptop. ^_^
Scroll to the bottom of the topic on this link:

Looking into it. The company itself appears reputable so there may be more going on here. I didn't click on the piston link directly because that's just as dangerous, but I did track down the post you linked to.
Any reason that couldn't have just been posted here?

Why would clicking on a link be dangerous?
I just wanted to show you that I'm not lying to you. I really don't care so much for my laptop, but I know a lot of people that lost money that way. Just wanted to warn others.
A LOT of sites are experiencing this particular ad from Adsense and complaining back to Google..
In any case, the ad is blocked. Thanks for reporting it.
