I was just wondering what an average poly count would be. For example, how many polys should a 1ghz computer be able to draw per frame with a good frame rate (25-30fps) if texturing and lighting is done in software? in hardware? thanks!

That''s depends very much on how the meshes are organized and how you render them, and what API you use.

In D3D, if you for example have 100 meshes containing 2 polys each, it will render MUCH MUCH slower than have one mesh containing 200polys. Because of buffer switches and the optimization indexed buffers give with larger vertex amounts.

It depends of course on your graphics card but I can render about 50 750poly MDLs at approximately 13FPS on my AMD K62 550MHz and a GF2 MX (well something like that on fullscreen 640x480x32) so something like 80 would probably yield an acceptable result if you have a "good" graphics card that is...

my code is by far not the fastest so if you optimize it to hell you might get up to a hundred of those models instead...

EDIT: since my card should be able to push about 24million polys per sec, the approx 487500 (750*50*13) I get is perhaps not that great I don't know

THey are bad - with your hardware you should push way more polys, sorry.

Some games ahve MODELS with more polygons than your whole screen.

ehrm... please explain what you meen with more polys then your whole screen? are you talking about not culling or the size of the polys or are you talking about models with 750*50 polys, if that''s the case I can assure you that it wouldn''t run on my system... I don''t think that 50 MDLs are such bad numbers since I only get a little better result with the code that VALVE used for Half-Life MDLs and since that code is OpenGL based it isn''t very strange (MDLs are originally written for OpenGL therefore they are bound to be faster in that environment), remember that when I said that my system should be able to push 24million polys per sec, that''s a theoretical number and comes nowhere near the "real" performance of the card.
