I think it would be useful to create a database of the capabilities (CAPS) for common graphics hardware. It might be useful for deciding what things to support when writing engines, demos, etc. The database could be made a available online. (Just a web page or Excel spreadsheet). What does everyone think? Has it been done? Is it a stupid idea? Suggestions?

There is already an online database like this. For OpenGL and for DirectX. I just cant find them anymore

Both sites(OGL/DX) have small utilities which you can download and run on youre own computer, so youre card will be added to the list if it doesnt exists yet.

Does anybody knows both URL''s of these sites?? Cant remember them... :|

Searching for the DirectX version, I know there is one!

lol, I was about to post that one too. It was indeed the one I had seen before.

But I rather have a database wich is more like the caps tool which is deliverd with the SDK of DirectX

I think this would be a cool feature for GameDev.net to have this database on there website, which can be filled by visitors(small downloadable util which gathers the information and sends them to gamedev.net)

The TECHlogic page is OK, but I''ve actually been thinking of making a new Direct3D caps database - a more comprehensive one where you could see things like supported texture formats (etc). Capability data would be stored in a MySQL database and updated automatically by running a simple client. A couple of PHP pages would show various views into the collected dataset.

Is this a project that sounds worthwhile, or would it be wasted effort considering the existing pages?

I think it would be a worthwhile project. But I''d prefer to be able to download the database so that it''s easier to browse.

The problem is that a database like that should be easy to find. The TECHLogic page is OK, but not so easy to find. A real game developer site would be a more logic place(gamedev.net ofcourse ) I think sites like gamedev.net or flipcode.com makes sure the database will be updated with the newer cards faster(or I hope).

If any help is needed with building the database/front-end(php)/client just send a mail: martin@a2sp.nl

How about making a selection which you can download as a simple table?

I agree. Hopefully some more people will show interest (And hopefully GameDev.Net too ).

That would probably be adaquate. I just want to be able to use the data in other programs (like Excel or maybe a program of my own).

Well, if I go ahead and do this I would much prefer to host it on my own site. If it''s any good I''m sure your favourite game development sites will link to it, making it easier to find. Besides, there''s probably too much traffic on gamedev.net as it is...
