I just thought of this: Many FPS games use signs in their levels. ''Warning,'' ''Danger,'' ''Armoury...'' While these have meaning for the player, the NPCs ignore them. So what if the signs were represented by entities, each of which had a ''vibe'' attached to it? Then, put entities in the doorway with which the sign is associated (make the sign target the doorway). Not only could this help out the pathfinding AI, but it means that an NPC could look at the ''vibe'' the sign emits and use that when deciding whether to run through a doorway. A quick example: In the middle of a firefight, a marine must retreat through one of two doorways. Above each is a sign - one says ''Storage'' and the other says ''Main Exit.'' The signs have ''dead-end'' and ''big-area'' vibes respectively. The marine picks the doorway with the ''big-area'' vibes, so that he doesn''t get stuck in a corner. A better example: A doorway is targeted by multiple signs, reading ''Danger'' and ''High Voltage.'' The marine avoids the doorway. Jumbled thoughts... guess I''d better get back to my HL coding Superpig - saving pigs from untimely fates - sleeps in a ham-mock at www.thebinaryrefinery.cjb.net

Well, sure.

But let''s say there were no signs on the storage room. Let''s say that despite that, there was a vibe on it which said "dead end". Now, this vibe is invisible to the NPC. Now, the NPC goes into the storage room. A flag should be tagged, indicating that vibe is no longer invisible to this NPC.

Next time that NPC is confronted with the choice of entering the storage room, he''ll see the vibe which says "dead end".

Anyway, all this vibe stuff sure sounds like annotated objects.

Oh, right. I never really kept track of the annotated objects discussion. Long threads scare me. Credit where it''s due, then (i.e. not to me)

I was just thinking along very vague lines... and in any case, this demonstrates a specific application of the AO theory.
