Hi there, Some 3D modeling packages seem to be aimed at making single objects such as cars. I'm in need a of a package (for around $150) which could be used to create maps. I'm just wondering what features make a package useful for maps instead of single objects. Another way of putting this is, in what way does an object differ from a map? Thanks, BD. Hi, thanks for your response.

Only trouble with WorldCraft/Hammer is that the license says...

''use VHE solely to develop New Levels for Half-Life and other compatible Valve products''

I need a map editor to create maps for my own 3D engine.

IMO it's the best editor out there. I dunno about the licensing but how really cares. No-ones gonna come fine you or whatever for using their level editor to make maps for your 3d engine. If your really serious about it you should code your own.

Oh and I've just thought of an editor that is free

If you have the game Unreal Tournament (and who doesn''t?) you could use UnrealEd 2.0 (if you have 1.0, get the UT patch 436) - I''m pretty sure you can use that editor for anything, and the file format is probably documented somewhere on the web. You will probably have to make some changes to the results though, as UT uses native formats for textures, etc., so you''ll want to convert those references to TGA, DDS or whatever.
That of course, is unless you find something better.
