I have been having a problem with my sound card recently.... it will normally crash my computer in under 10 mins... one time it ran for ove r30 mins just fine but did crash all the same... I was wondering if it might be the irq settings.. I noticed that when looking at control panel->system->device manager, my vid card is using irq 11 and so is my sound card.... is this the problem? thanx a lot for the help! Tazzel3d ~ Dwiel

IRQ conflicts can cause a lot of problems.

However, my sound card and my video card were on the same IRQ for quite some time and seemed to have no problems. Aside from messing in the bios (under PnP & PCI), I can''t think of a way to change IRQ''s. But then again, I grew up on the Mac where stuff works the first time.

Any of the Windows addicts in here can probably detail how to change your IRQ.

My advice stands --

upgrade your drivers or reinstall windows.

Resist everyone

I tried updating the drivers and reinstalling windows.... does anyone here know how to manually change the irq #s? or is this not my problem? thanx for the quick response!!!

I''m going to take a wild guess here, but you said in your "testing motherboard" thread that you had a 250 watt power supply. Normally, I would think that would be enough, but indications seem otherwise. I would try a 300 watt and see if that stabalizes things. If you are borderline on your power supply, that could create an unstable system.

As for IRQ, you could always plug the card in a different slot. But given the time it takes to corrupt the system, I''m not sure that would help. Then again, I don''t know the timing of symptoms resulting in an IRQ conflict on these newer systems.

Well just about everything should be PnP. This means windows(or another os) can tell the card what irq to use and so it''s easy to sort out conflicts. For this to work though you have to have pnp switched on in the bios and make sure everything is set to pnp instead of isa(you should see when you do it). If you have a very old card you have to set jumpers on the board to set it to a irq that doesn''t confilict with anything I think

Is it ok if I use 2 different power supplies?
I dont have a 300watt power supply handy that has the right plug for my motherboard... is it not a good idea to use 2 power supplies just for testing purposes?... if it is the power supply, i will def replace it rather than using two but for testing is it ok?

thanx for the thoughts!

I was always taught PnP stood for Plug n Pray.

Anyway, I do not know about the use of two power supplies for testing. Though, I can''t see any real harm the could come from doing such a thing, I would be careful what power supply plugged in where.

You could use one for the motherboard power, another for separate compnoents, hard drive, CD ROM etc. That should take a load off the one driving your motherboard.

I have never heard of such a tact being used, so I don''t know what the outcome will be. So, I can''t make any reccomendation.

I think im going to try it... It has worked on a diff computer that I didn''t really care what happened to... I needed another cable to plug in a second HD, but there was no cable so i pluged in another power supply... as long as both were turned on around the same time.. everything worked out

i think i might put the master drive on the same supply as the motherboard though so that they at least are turned on simoltaniously <- can''t spell... thanx for the quick response!
