The owner of that page should do something useful with it.
Grumble. I''d much rather see an interesting database full of vaporware and dead software, hardware and otherwise projects.

and to think he pays to keep that site up.. probably has some gigabytes of porn behind that index page...
Actually it would appear he is trying to learn web scripting (cgi, perl, java). Just check out his unprotected directory to see his work (mostly hello world type programs and scripts designed to show your details like IP and referer).
Of particular use/interest is this
When I found that counter the value was at 1 (I was the first hit), right now its at 77. Guess we get to see a rough guess of how many people visit the inside of his site. Maybe someone should rig up a script to keep loading the counter, he'll freak when he sees his counter *that is unlisted* showing something like 1000+ hits.
EDIT: Now at 95, guess alot of people are visiting

So what would happen if I did this:

EDIT: There; help rack up that counter

Heh, of course his ''counter'' was 1 when you first visited it, it didn''t existed at that point. In fact, you created it by visting the URL... The string ''unique_id'' was just an example, and meant to be replaced by his own ID. I just created a new counter on his server, named ''counter'', and set it to an interesting value... If he sees this one, he''ll get a heart attack...

Suddenly that 340 counter above doesn''t seem so funny

Out of curiosity, how do you "protect" a directory? I have a web site I''m building, and I''d be interested to know these things...would you have to just put a index.html there? or is there something else you can do?

index.html is fine. Basically the server only sends a directory listing if there is no index.* file to send and if it has been configured to use a directory listing as default (most servers are). There are exploits to get past this but most involve exploiting weaknesses in standard cgi scripts hosted on the site (cgi-test for instance).

The easiest way:
you@server:~$ chmod 700 /some/directory
or
you@server:~$ chmod 000 /some/directory
If you're really serious
