I guess this is more of a poll than anything. My ISP ( www.nexicom.net ) went down to day. Second time in one year, that I noticed anyway. They also messed up my web site once. Pretty reliable I think. When it does go down, it''s usually up again within an hour or so. Had a diddley ISP before this one ( www.kawartha.com ). They where down for long periods at least once a week. When I changed ISPs they never cleaned out my old web site. I think they sold the business, but maybe I still have two websites. This ISP was so small, I had to go down and show their techy how to get the right info to get my web site up. He had no idea that you could ftp through DOS. What they did was give me the wrong directory for my web site. Anyway, what''s your ISP and how reliable is it ? Guy

Optimum Online. Love ''em. Never had one problem in over 2 years.

Rogers Hi-Speed (cable)

It's pretty reliable. I also work for their phone tech support, so I hear people bitch and complain all day about how bad/slow/unreliable it is.

Of course, I know how to fix it if it breaks

I am using "Cox Cable". ( the name is not a lie ) My connection occasionally - usually once every week goes down but is up within the hour. The only problem I have with them are the ping spikes I get using early in the morning (12-4am), but not during the afternoon or night.

RoadRunner, from TimeWarner. Great ISP, rarely ever down, no bandwith caps, and FAST. They also have very lenient restrictions on what you do with your bandwith...LANS are no problem.

They also have great service. I called them up the other day to find out whether they bind to a MAC address or not, and the first lady I talked to answered my question.

I use SBC Ameritech... it''s not the greatest, fastest, but it''s ok (it got rated a D- in PC Mag''s thing). Optimum Online got an A+ I think. I want to switch to someone called TDS Metrocom, which I think is just regional... but then again, I did just get DSL two weeks ago .

When I had RoadRunner it was ALWAYS down. It would be down for hours on end about ever two weeks. I thought that they had horrible customer service as well. hmmmm....

Anyway, now I have AT&T Broadband and it''s been perfect so far. I hate their phone help system though. Their voice thing is too damn slow

Nobody ever mentions where they are...

RoadRunner _in Wisconsin_ is excellent

I had a two-day down time in january... but not since, so I''m happy

Earthlink, which is pretty reliable (down for maybe an hour every two weeks). It's pretty slow, but that's because the phone lines outside our house are horrible (tech support said it was miraculous that DSL even works under those conditions ). In theory it should be a 1.5 Megabits per second line, but in practice we get 200 kilobits.

NTL 128k Broadband.

I can''t really tell when ''downtime'' is but I often get signed off, and usually you just reboot computer and set top box and all is well but when ''downtime'' happens, which i THINK is downtime it disconnects me and it wont reboot the set top box for a few hours.

If this is downtime every few weeks and lasting 10mins - a few hours

NTL dont have very good customer services either

What about me? What about Raven?

I''ve had NTL 128K for about a month and had zero downtime.

Thanks for the replies !

Looks like I''m not the only one with occasional ISP trouble, though I''m pretty happy with the one I have now. I can live without the internet, wait, no I can''t. Gee, I wonder what life is like with no internet. I''m an information junkie, I shudder at the thought.

Yea, I have heard that Roadrunner in Wisconsin is good. But I don''t like cable, especially since I''m in Milwaukee, so I bet it can slow sometimes.

sounds like you bought into the myth that cable internet slows down magically as more people use it...

"sounds like you bought into the myth that cable internet slows down magically as more people use it..."

It''s not magic. Bandwidth is a limited resource. If you have 100Mbit of bandwidth and one person is using 1Mbit, you''ve only got 99Mbit left to share. If that 99Mbit gets claimed and more people want some, everyone starts to see a drop. If 200 people want to use a 100Mbit line they''re only going to get 500bytes each if all are using the most they can get.

Or do you believe in the bandwidth fairy?

Ben
