*looks at Everything Unix Forum... Sees nothing* SOOOOOOO... Is there any utility that tests my computer to see if it''d run linux? Ive tried Google just to let you know. I''m planning on installing slackware on my computer. Any help is taken greatfully.

Give it a try and see if it works? A bare-bones install shouldn''t take very long.

And no, I do not know of any utilities.

There is a utility, it's called the 'Head of a Linux Guru' You get them from your local sysadmin/sysprog retirement village.

You should be able to squeeze linux onto just about anything these days. I managed to build a server/gateway/firewall from an old P133 with less than a Gb of disk space... and I still had room left over! Heck, I have a colleage who has managed to compile Linux for an old DEC Station. I'm seriously thinking of trashing NetBSD from mine and going with Linux.

As for peripherals, almost anything fitted to a pentium class box is supported with modules these days... and if it's not, just try the default modules... they usually work fairly well.

The question one has to ask though is why do you want to install Linux (and on what hardware)?

Cheers,

Timkin

I snatched 3 old, non-working PCs from my neighbor and slapped together a cheap linux box that actually works:

P166Mhz
800MB HD
32MB RAM

No modem, no sound card, no 3D card.

I'm sure your 'puter has better specs
Toss it on and say to hell with windows!

EDIT: hell, I have a version of Linux, called Trinux, on a floppy! Just boot it up and you have a command line OS. Although most of the apps are on another floppy (really i think i only have one app, and that's a text editor)

I think Mandrake''s site has an extensive list of hardware that''s been tested on it. Each distro supports about the same hardware, so it should be a good jumping-off point for you.

Resist everyone
