Windows programming

Original Post
I have pretty good skills (i''d say better but it''d seem like bragging ^_^) in C/C++ but the only way I know to make windows apps right now is to use the Allegro 4.0 game programming library (an extremely portable library). What books would you recommend for writing general windows apps and for Direct X?
(hopefuly seperate books for each.)
Also, anyone know what I''d have to do (code wise) to port a windows app using Direct-X to the Microsoft XDK? I realize I need a modchip, etc.
There''s been a couple of posts lately on "What books should I get to learn windows programming?" etc. Do a search, you''ll find plenty of books

Ahah, yeah I have the original DOS book (for some reason I intentionally wanted the DOS one back then ^_^). Great book. Sorry about the post, 5 minutes after I got offline it accured to me that:
1. I could just search for it (like you guys politely said)
2. I could just use Gamedevs BOOK SECTION!
I can''t believe I was so blind ahah. Must have been from to much Dance Dance. =)
Thanks for not flaming me for such a ill thought out post.

Charles Petzold, author of a version of Programming Windows for each Windows iteration. I agree with daerid about WTL, but its usefulness to you is limited if you don''t understand the fundamentals of the system. There are also a bunch of Base Services that WTL doesn''t address (WTL is basically GUI programming).
