RTF editor

Original Post
Hi,
Does anyone know of a good freeware RTF editor that wouldn''t crash and provides an easy interface to create a .hlp source file for Microsoft Help Workstation. The latter is old enough to not be able to process anything created in M$ Word (even if retrosave). I''ve scoured the Web for some time now and it seems such editors are a lot more scarce than one would expect (the main issue being compatibility between MHW and the RTF file).
Any replies would be much appreciated,
Crispy
Wordpad, maybe?
Or make it yourself, using the RichEdit control. In most RAD environments, like Delphi, BCB, VB or C#, this should be about 5 minutes of work.

Well, yeah - what I had in mind was a ''visual'' RTF editor where you don''t have to write the tags yourself. That''s what I find to be a bit of a bore, especially as I''d have to spend some time to become comfortable with it. Besides, I''ve read someplace that ''you shouldn''t ever try to write your RTF file directly''. In this case I''m looking for a simple, straightforward solution.
PS - Wordpad acts weird when you start positioning stuff in it - it messes up colors and alignment and basically does not work.
Thanks anyway,

you can try openoffice.org.
Thanks a bunch, niyaw! The format it saves into is accepted by MS Help Workstation, although I still have to create the footnotes and page breaks in MS Word - oh well... That''s what you get when you start writing too much stuff that you''re constantly using, but find annoying to refer to in a source file because of the syntax - you start thinking of writing your own hlp reference file
Thanks again,

you know, html help is much better than hlp files...
Not if you''re hooked on context-sensitive help as am I. I just love the F1 feature even though I haven''t got the IDE to recognize my help file yet - bah! The only thing I miss in a hlp file is the Ctrl+F functionality in the open topic... I guess it all boils down to a matter of taste, though.

msvc provides context help by f1 with html help, why can''t you do that too?
Uhmm... neither of those two scenarios I gave you implied that you should write RTF tags manually. Wordpad has RTF as one of its export formats, and the richedit control also lets you manipulate the contents through code and then save as .rtf.

Mkay - I wasn''t probably fully concentrated when I read your post because I''ve tried using Wordpad, and to no avail. Furthermore, Wordpad doesn''t support footnotes which are a vital link in creating hlp files. Anyways, sorry, my bad.
