I just got some materials for an online java course which says "We will be programming in Java, the current version being jdk 1.3. So your should install such as system on you machine. The best place to start is the Java online tutorial, which has a step by step installation for both Windows and Unix:" The link offered: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/ I see no sign of a ''J''dk, only ''S''dk. Is it the same thing, and do i really need to use the 1.3 version instead of the newer 1.4?

Yes thet are the same, AFAIK the only difference is the filename, 1.3 being jdk"version" and 1.4 being j2sdk"version". Anyway you can probably use 1.4, there are a few problems I''ve encountered while trying to compile 1.3 examples and source with 1.4. I would download both just in case. 1.3: Download and 1.4: Download

Sun distributed two versions of the runtime. The JRE ( runtime only - no compiler ) and the JDK ( runtime + compiler ). Since you will need to program, you need the sdk.

Since there can be subtle and agrivating diffrences between 1.3 and 1.4 I would stick with the 1.3 ( currently 1.3.1 ). You can have any number of Java2 jre''s or sdk''s installed on one system as you would like as long as they are in diffrent dirctories ( I have 3 on my windows platform and 3 under linux too ).
