Hi, Being a newbie to all this more or less, I hope some of you out there can dispel my fears or confirm them ... whichever. There are two libraries, the debug and the runtime while installing the SDK. I have read that its usually better to install the debug libraries for development even though it compromises speed. I do understand this perspective. But I have one computer on which I play games too. The commercial ones I mean. Would installing the debug libraries screw up their performance? Would they overwrite the runtime libraries that come with Win XP? And if I select the run time libraries, would it screw up the DirectX runtime that I already have? Also, ive seen a fair amount of debugging can be done using messageboxes (though its a pain in the ass method of doing it), wouldn''t having the libraries and include files suffice? Ultimately, if I want to learn and develop using DX 8 would i have to have a seperate computer to just develop stuff and use another one to play the games that I buy? Anyone out there, please throw some light on this matter! Thanks.

Hey! don''t panic, you can install both runtimes with no overwriting anything (I''ve done it several times) the only matter with this is, that if you install de debug runtime it may cause (it will) a slowdown when playing games made on such version of DirectX, so if you installed the DirectX 8.1 sdk, and you use the debug runtime, then you may notice a slowdown in games made with this runtime for example GTA3. But there is no problem, you can develop with the retail runtime with no problem, I do sometimes.
There is also the option to install the debug or retail anytime you want it (in the start menu).
So, don''t even think about buying another computer, there is no need to do it.

I recommend you installing de debug runtime and giving it a try, it will also put an icon in the control panel from which you can set the debug amount, but don''t put it to high, it sometimes gives a lot of warnings in some programs like mediaplayer.

Ok, let''s straighten this out once and for all:
If you got debug runtimes installed, ALL games will use it,
if you got retail runtimes installed, ALL games will use it.
There is no way to have them both installed at the same time, so when you''re developing, switch to the debug, otherwise go with retail. You can select which one to use from the Start-menu under the SDK-folder.

It doesn''t matter if the game is developed using debug or retail-runtimes, the only thing that matters is what version you''ve got installed on your box.

And please tell everyone this
