what are the most common 16bit pixel format supported by graphics devices? sorry for my bad english...

Reportedly the most common pixel format 16bpp is 5x5x5. There are ways to test whether a given video card supports either 5x5x5 or 5x6x5.

most common 555? where did you get this information from?
i have not seen a up-to-date 555 card so far, all my pcs and those of my friends are 565...
well, of course that is not very representative

Reportedly is just that; I personally don''t think 5x5x5 would be as common as one game programming book I''ve read claims it to be. I don''t claim that it''s correct, rather I would suggest testing the pixel format and avoiding assumptions altogether. If some code is desired I can post a snippet that demonstrates this.

I don''t know any 5-5-5 video card except this ATI-crap!

of course you may not just assume that an user has a gfx card capable of a certain rgb format, but you have to test for it.
i am having quite a lot of trouble with transparency on 555 cards because as i said i don''t know anyone with a 555 card and can''t test out if it works

Which part of the transparency are you having troubles with? the colory keying?

did i say transparency? i meant translucency

well, you know that you have to shift a lot when you combine the pixels in translucency, and the problem is that i think it SHOULD work on RGB555 cards because i am testing for it and acting accordingly, but some guy over the net said it would look all wrong on his card...

My old S3Virge DX 4MB is another example of 5-5-5 video-card.
