PageMaker is for document layout - like designing a brochure, formating a book and so forth. PageMaker is a high octane word processor, the output gets sent to printing presses not printers*. Because it's made by Adobe, it works well with Illustrator files, but only in regard to embedding them into the larger document. If you want a program that handles 2D vector graphics well, check out Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand or Corel Draw.
* yes you can print from PageMaker; However, most times layouts designed with PageMaker are intended to be printed on printing presses.

Illustrator takes a lot of pc juice too - but that''s not so much of a problem these days. I haven''t seen the latest version of Photoshop, so I can''t speak to the current state of it''s "PATHS", but in older versions they were crude in comparison with what Illustrator can do.
