The Carmack's space program

Original Post
John Carmack has created Armadillo Aerospace, a company that will try to get normal people into space. Here''s an interview with him about it.
This is something I''d like to see realized. I''d definitely like to visit space, even if I would be on the fringe of it.
Reminds me of a book I read about a million years ago: Have Spacesuit Will Travel. Not exactly the same premise, but it all sounds like backyard, seat of the pants, make it work from scrap and salvage have a good old time with a rockets and farm tractors type of engineering.
Sounds fun.

Well, first of all let me say I respect Carmack very much. But, I think his enthusiasm is getting the better of him with this space thing. Space travel and coding are worlds apart.. if you have a bug in your code, your program crashes or behaves incorrectly, no big deal - but a bug in spaceship and/or rocket design can cost huge sums of money, or ultimately, loss of human life. I think we as programmers have gotten used to incremental refinement, i.e the attitude that bugs do happen, and when they do it''s just a matter of finding and fixing them. But when the stakes are that high (being in space) there is NO room for error... you have to get it right the first time or it''s a disaster. That''s a fundamental difference.. then again Carmack seems pretty intelligent and probably knows this
Just because NASA hasn''t done it yet, doesn''t mean they''re incompetent fools. They spend billions upon billions of dollars in research, so you''d think they know a thing or two about rockets and space travel. Personally, I think they''ve already explored this avenue and deemed it unfeasible, either from a practical or financial standpoint. Then again, maybe they haven''t bothered to, or for other reasons (i.e not wanting to kill the airline industry) they choose not to. But one thing is for sure, is that if it is indeed feasible, and space travel is the wave of the future, it isn''t John Carmack and his Ferrari mechanic that are going to bring it to the mainstream. He knows next to nothing about space, and in relative terms has no resources to accomplish it. In terms of knowledge about space/rockets, he is but an ant in a giant''s world.
If you ask me, it''s just a fling, and he''ll get over it when he realizes what an immmense undertaking it is

I told you guys that Carmack was an alien! Now he is just trying to find a way to get home because he is sick of people pestering him...

ultimately, loss of human life.
There are 6 billion humans on this planet, a few wont matter.

The Carmack of experimental aircraft, dick rutan, says that if people are not literally dying to get into space then we are not doing it right. It is dangerous. So was crossing the atlantic a few hundred years ago. Now we know how to do it in relative safety.

I don''t care if it is Carmack or another but i can''t wait for the power of the free-market economy to get behind space exploration. All of NASA''s budget = 1/100th of the top ten pharmaceutical companies R & D budgets. As soon as someone turns a good profit in space.. here we come...

I think just because he is a programmer doesn''t mean that that is the way it is going to be. Couldn''t one of the reasons they hired him be because he is a very smart and innvotive thinker. Even using him as a think-tank would be a big help I''m sure. And heck, he sure does know a lot about computers and could help greatly in implementing that stuff..
