Would any of you give up a good girlfriend for your programming? Just wondering where the people stand on this issue, cuz it''s a big one for me right now. Best regards, Tony Burns

Huh?

Program if that is what you want to do. Do both. Do neither. Don''t be a waffling jellyfish. Establish who you are and what you want to do. Have a girlfriend and program.

There is never enough time in life to do everything. Just take it as it comes.

If your GF was meant to be then she would understand that programming is only second best to her

If you enjoy programming, you shouldn''t let a girl get in the way. As eminem would say, "Fuck bitches, get me a fat slut that cooks and does dishes." Uhh...something along those lines.

Seriously though, would you be happy turning down a personal joy for a girl that may actually end up not being the right person for you? I personally wouldn''t risk it. Sure, relationships are about sacrifice, but if it is something that you consider to be big then you shouldn''t. Work it out, maybe there is another way.

erm...

How would a girlfriend get in the way of programming?

Time management. It''s a marvelous thing. If your gf doesn''t understand the concept of "me time" or "I have work to do" then she''s not all that great.

Just explain to her that programming, to you, is a job. Asking you to not program is like asking you to not work.

It''s unreasonable for her to ask you to quit your job for her. It''s not unreasonable to cut your hours or adjust your schedule. If you''re young get away from the computer. Real Life is more important than programming. You''ll have 40+ years to be a boring corporate slave. Learn to live while you don''t have bills to pay.

I have a GF for 3 years and I can do both. I started to program a little before we met. She understands that programming is important to be, my hobby. But I would never give her up to program. Although our relationship is going to end I love her a lot(She me too). We have a problem with what we feel for eachother now, hope it works our :''(

It''a all a matter of your priorities.

It''s a shame to miss out on opportunities as we let them pass by, but those are choices we have to make.

The question is, which opportunity do you want to grab at at this time? Choosing programming, choosing your girlfriend, or finding a way to have both, relationships realistically being more important?
It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.

When i got married (5yrs ago) I had a job, Long hair, in a band... Now I have short hair, wear glasses, go to University and programming most of the time (honest). My Wife claims shes married a geek!!! but she still supports me and brings me a cup of tea when i am getting stressed. If you girlfreind is great, just make sure when you say you''re programming you actually are programming (Like me right now).
Make sure you show her that you respect and appriciate her support in your interests.

You shouldn''t give up programming for a girl. She''ll say that''s all she wants, so you give it up, then she comes back with something else she wants you to change about yourself, and so the cycle begins. Wait for a girl who appreciates who you are, and not who she wants you to be.

There are some very sad people here who truely believe that programming takes precidence over a girlfriend/boyfriend. Get lives, I have a serious girlfriend, and I program, but there is no way in hell I''d say to her "No, I want to stay in and program my 3D engine instead of going to your birthday" for instance. It''s all about priorities, and what will make you happier in the long run.

Death of one is a tragedy, death of a million is just a statistic.

Seriously what is wrong with some of you people, don''t ever give up something human for sitting infront of your computer screen. Some of you can end up and be very lonely, and you will regret when you threw something good away. There is always a way to balance things, I''m sure you can code and see your girlfriend too.

And where does he state that she is trying to make him give up programming?

"If your GF was meant to be then she would understand that programming is only second best to her "

Zao - I''m pretty sure you meant that as a joke, if not you are going to end up a very lonely man

Love is what life is about, don''t throw it away so easy, and think hard about who you would rather be, your computer screen or your girlfriend - and it''s not like you can''t do both, alot of people here seems to think so, im pretty sure they daydream about having a girlfriend too

I regret to inform you that your opinion is WRONG.

All human emotion is an inappropriate response to input. Ask yourself why you do the things you do. Think about the merit in relationships. Question your existence. View the world through the eyes of someone else. Understand that nothing lasts. Everything costs, and everything returns as long as you don''t throw time away. You can preach that companionship is nifty ''n'' all that, but there really is no point in anything. You can''t appreciate the moments in life if you look at where you end up when it''s all over. That''s the way it should be. Get a clue, you helpless lovers.

Out,
ZE.

I don''t have a girlfriend to give up.

Though there is this really cute girl at work who is a couple years older than me and I am way to shy to ask out anyway. But, I wouldn''t give up my imaginary relationship with her just for programming.

Ahhh, my favorite movie. I''ve seen it about 20 times. And for some reason, whenever it is on TV, I watch it, even though I have the DVD version sitting right there.

Do you really have to chose? Is this a "it''s me or your compiler" deal?

Erunama:

I''m glad I''m not only one who does that with The Shawshank Redemption.

You know you''re a programmer when your computer is like family. When it''s more like a lover, you need help.

long CanYou = relationship+programming;
return (CanYou < time) ? TRUE : FALSE
}

If you don't have time for both, then it's because your girlfriend won't let you have any time for programming.
If you girlfriend won't compromise and let you have time for programming, she's not worth your time (note I refrained from stronger language there ).
Thus, if you don't have time for both, stick with the comp.
(of course this is my way of looking at it, some people think getting into meaningless relationships with girls who aren't right for you is what life is all about, so it doesn't apply for them)
