Visual C++ .NET

Original Post
I was about to order Visual C++ .NET when I noticed the system requirments, and the only version of Windows it runs on is NT 4, 2000, and XP.
So it won't run on Windows 98?! What am I supposed to do now?! I'm not going to buy a new OS just to run an IDE!
Perhaps Codeweaver or Borland. How good are they for game development?
EDIT: Wups, meant Codewarrior.

Dev-C++ 5 Beta is mostly usable now.
Just looked at Codewarrior, and its definatly too expensive for me.
I''ve tried Dev-C++ before, but i didn''t like it too much. I missed stuff from Visual C++ where tooltips would show me the type of variable, paramater lists, stuff like that. I also miss being able to right click on a variable or function and going to it''s declaration or definition.

YOU WILL BOW DOWN TO THE WILL OF MICRO$OFT... YOU HAVE NO MIND OF YOUR OWN. PURCHASE WIN XP NOW.
I have a theory that MICRO$OFT''s ultimate goal is to develop an OS that links hardware directly to the brain, this would have brilliant uses, unfortunately MICRO$OFT would also require you to sign over to them the rights for your thoughts, brainwaves, dreams...

You can do that. Hold control and click on the variable.
Yes you can. Same way as with the variables.
Sorry to intrude on this thread, but it seems on topic.
This thread encouraged me to try Dev-C++.
Looks like a decent compiler.
No help whatsoever though.
However, I''m getting an error:
undefined reference to ''IID_IDirectInput8A''
The 3D side of things links very well. Just input problems. So far anyway.
And yes, I was going to buy Visual C++.NET too until I saw this thread. I hope I can pick up an older version somewhere.

I imagine that you need to add -ldinput8 to the linker options and include dinput.h, although I haven''t used Direct Input with Dev-C++ so I could be wrong.
I just have a few things to say
1) The main reason that Visual Studio .Net is only abailable on the NT Kernel is because the entire thing uses UniCode, and the developers thought that it would be a better use of resources to work on other things than converting all of the Unicode.
2) The IDE is a dream. It might take a week at most to get used to, but it makes your life much easier. I have also heard that the unmanaged VC7 compiler creates smaller and faster exectubales than VC6, but I don''t have any first hand knowledge ot this.
3) The real reason that VS.Net is only on the NT kernael is because Microsoft figured most developers were smart enough to use a development platform that didn''t crash in the middle of a compile.

Back to Dev-C++...
I''m having trouble compiling my game. Its got lots and lots of source files, and when it gets time to link them I get an error saying something like "bad filename or request" and I''m pretty sure thats the same thing DOS says if you put in a command that''s too long, so that''s what I''m assuming is going on.
Is that what''s going on? Why is it telling me bad filename when it''s just using g++, which was used many times right above that part?
I like Dev-C++ as an IDE, but the compile process ain''t working too hot.

Apparantly you have to careful setting project, compiler settings to look for stuff. I don't know if that's the problem or not but it's worth checking out. I have posted a thread in the Dev-C++ forums. You might consider doing the same.
[EDIT] I see you already posted a thread . [/EDIT]

I compiled Allegro without problems and there were a few huge commands like this:

I have done some more investigating, and I found that when I use the same makefile that Dev-C++ is using with Cygwin that there were some .o files that it couldn''t find. Apparently Dev-C++ doesn''t report those errors or something.
The real error message ("Cannot find yohoho.o!") would be more useful than the one it gives ("Bad command or filename") at the VERY end of the compile.

I upgraded to win 2000 just for .Net, and I'm SO glad I did. Its so much nicer than 98, and I haven't had it crash yet (running over 6 months). As others have said, VC.Net is worth it. The feature that I think is the coolest is the link-time optimization. That means that the compiler can do program wide optimizations instead of only function wide. Pretty cool huh.

I have the .net compiler (standard edition) but it says the compiler can not do optimizations. Is there a reason for this?
