Overclocking

Original Post
Hi,
I have one computer with a PIII 550 Mhz processor (SLOT 1) and I am considering overclocking it to 600 Mhz. What are the chances of overheating? Will it decrease too much its lifetime?
Thanks,
Andre

You''ll probably find a better answer at ArsTechnica
In my opinion the % Mhz gain that you''ll get going from 550 to 600 isn''t worth it.

Won''t an Athlon XP 1600 not be compatible with his current motherboard which supports Pentium III 550s? If so, this means a new motherboard. If the new motherboard fits in the original case, great. If not, it means a new case. Will one need a new power supply for this different motherboard? If so....
Etc. Etc.
Etc. Etc.

At most it will mean a new motherboard. If he has a PIII 550, then he already has an ATX power supply. So unless he bought a non-standard motherboard in the first place, any new motherboard will fit his current case. So for under $200US, you have a new machine.

But chances are it''ll be 200 or 250 Watts, which is short of the recommended 300 Watts for Athlons.
Plus, to get the most out of the performance of the Athlon and it''s motherboard, he''ll have to get new memory - DDR memory.
All in all, not terribly cheap.
Actuly he''ll have to get new memory no matter what. As far as I remebers the P3 550s ran its RAM at 100 MHz while the new Athlons run thier at 133 MHz so even if he''d use the old regular SDRAM he''d need new memory (unless he runs the mb at 100MHz in which case he''d lose performance)..

Call me narrow minded, but I have a strange feeling this subject might actually NOT be all that related to game programming...
Overclocking! LOL!

Overclocking Slot 1 PII/PIII does not bring many rewards.
Ive got a PII-350 and ivw colocked it to 392 and it works fine.
With my experience (no gurantees) I think that u can clock the 550 to 600, but not more. The PIII Slot I is built on the katmai core which was only sold up to 600 Mhz so the chances of going higher are minimal. If u install 2 fans on the processor, it wont overheat and maybe it will work even with standart cooling.
If your motherbord can support the coppermine celleron then get it (but it probably wont) they get clocked up to 50%. Ive got a 600 at 900. But u must add extra coolers and clean up the case to get propper cooling. Also I increased the voltage from 1.7V to 1.8V. Temerature? 35-40 but ussually lower.
Best solution: Get a Athlon, but u will need a new boar and probably a new case (or just the power supply if u have an ATX) and u will need new memmory.
Ive tested a XP1800 lately and with a good cooler it got the temperature was under 40 schocking but true i even touched the heatsink to make sure. The heatsing of my 486/33 got a lot hotter than that Athlon so there are overclocking possibilies with the Athlon ass well.

Oh yeah, forgot about DDR memory.
Power supply I figured would be at least 250 and maybe 300, so that is why I ddin''t mention it. Anyway a new case is not too expensive, but throw in the DDR and a case, add another ~$200.

Thansk very very very very very very much Psycho-Coder!!!!!!
You´ve answered all my questions...
Think I am going to an Athlon since as you said I won´t have many benefits...
Best Regards,
André
