this isnt your normal help wanted post.. i posted here because im having a problem with dreamweaver and i need help! ;P (staff- web development forum please? heh) okay well here''s the problem: i''m trying to create a table in dreamweaver that will hold the ''news'' snippets for my site. it *should* look like this: however, in dreamweaver, i cant get the center frame border (the one between the date and my name) to slide over any farther to the right: and when i preview it in IE, it doesnt look ANYTHING like i planned: does anybody know what the hell im doing wrong? i''m no web designer, but im tired of people nagging me to finish my site so im giving it a shot help help help!! by the way- sorry about the large picture sizes, i tried to shrink them, but it started to alias some of the frame-lines and stuff out. thanks in advance -eldee ;another space monkey; [ Forced Evolution Studios ]

Hi all,

it''s hard to say exactly what''s wrong but it may be due to some cell''s widht and/or height conflict.
Can u send me the codes(just for that table) and the needed files(pictures,...) in a zip file by @mail?

Turn off auto word-wrap in the tables where the date text is located first of all.. that might fix it.

Eldee,

When I was setting up the tables for my site I found it very helpful to use spacer files. I made a 1 pixel x 1 pixel tranparent GIF in Photoshop and then used the height and width settings in the Dreamweaver properties window to resize it to whatever dimensions I needed.

For instance, if I wanted a row in a table to be 40 pixels tall, I would put the spacer image in the leftmost cell, leave the width at 1, and set the height to 40, forcing my row height to 40.

There is a to have Dreamweaver create the spacer for you. Don''t have my manual handy, but check in the index under "spacer" or "shim"

Hope this helps,

okay i got it looking all nice and pretty in dreamweaver,
but IE jacks it all up. i open it in mozilla and it''s just
how i saw it in dreamweaver... giving me one more reason
to hate IE.
anybody know why it would work in mozilla and not IE?

just a quick question though- if you inserted a transparent gif
into a cell and forced the cell''s size to match that of the gif,
how would you get text in the cell on top of the gif without using
layers?

No, the spacer ends up either above or to the left of your text:

To make a table with 3 columns, each 100 pixels wide, put a spacer GIF in the top row of each column, with a height of 1 and a width of 100. Then shift-return and start your text just below the spacer. The spacer holds the column width at 100, while only taking up 1 pixel of vertical space.

To set row heights use the same technique, but set the width to 1, and the height to whatever you want the row height to be. I put the spacers at the beginning of each row, with text (or whatever) starting just after.

Eldee,
I had alot of similar problems working with dreamweaver too. I usually do the following to get what i see in dreamweaver to look like preview.
(i) set page margins to zero.
(ii) use filler images (like what some mentioned earlier)
(iii) use pixels, not percentages (press F10)
(iv) use CSS to get my texts right

hope this helps.
P.S. I like your design. I have seen some sites using graphical borders like yours. To solve your problem, I would mae a 3x3 table, put the text in the center cell and do my graphics on the sides. you might want to goto www.gamenikki.com to see how they did it. good luck
