How about we let the poster decide what is in his/her sig, and mods can edit them if they think there is a problem?

I disagree SuperRoy, I think eldee's sig isn't too big, but is about the biggest that should be allowed, it isn't nearly as big as the "I'm a * mage" sigs.
As for the OP suggestion: I think the forums shouldn't enforce a line above sigs, because some signatures (ie. eldee's) wouldn't look anywhere as good.
I suppose people could just edit the post and remove the line though. Though that would get really annoying.

I agree with SuperRoy.
I''ve been using a line for a while and I think it looks better.
Eldees sig - I think its OK, but it could easily be edited to be three four lines shorter if everything was on one line.

I just kinda thought it was hard to tell what someone was writing, or if it was there sig. sometimes its obvios but in other places its hard to tell. I never thought that you could add a line in your sig. Yes I know thats pretty stupid but oh well.
also, it would be nice if it just made a reference to your sig, instead of adding it to your post. that way, if you changed it,
it would show the changes. Like people with gigantic sigs.

Maybe .sig text should default to a different color or fontface, but still allow you to override that (like some people currently do) with a specification.

But then we couldn''t go .sig hunting, or chronicle the evolution of people''s .sigs (like my former utility belt .sig)
Incidentally, you should use an HTML
in your .sig instead of a bunch of underscores. It looks ridiculous when quoted.
I think eldee''s .sig is actually quite large. Maybe most people only focus on the image. If you consider everything involved in there - the name, the subtitle, the link, the image and the quote - you see that it''s easily way larger than most trivial posts. For me, that''s the guideline: you should be able to make a one-line post and not have it look lopsided because of the size of your .sig.
I''m mostly undecided about what to do about sigs. Some of my thoughts:
- We really need to do something to limit signature size. I''m tired of seeing posts where the signatures take up more space than the actual content.
- Perhaps a solution to the above would be to allow people to specify in their profile whether or not they see sigs. Right now, that''s not possible because sigs are baked into the message at creation.
- No clear winner on sigs being referenced (i.e. updating everywhere when you change them) or keeping them the way you were when they posted. I see advantages to both. We wouldn''t be able to filter them unless they were reference, though.
- I''d rather not add a line before sigs, but at the same time, it often *is* hard to tell whether a sig is part of the post or not. So I''m not sure how to best handle that. Putting them in a different font size/color by default may be the best solution.

Hmm, what about a three options: show full sigs, show text only, show no sigs. I don''t mind seeing the small one-liners sigs, some of them are actually quite good. But I generally find images in sigs annoying.
Another idea about restricting the sig size: If the user enters a sig in his profile, validate it before it is stored in the DB. Check the total size it would take in a post (incl. images) and reject it, if it''s over a certain limit.
Good suggestions, Yann.
