Many people talk about ''the good old days'' when in Mode X you would get access to the framebuffer, and that was it. That actually sounds like fun! Does anyone know if it would be a good programming experience making a few simple games in Mode X, and if I''m good (and learn my math), maybe even make a simple 3D game? Well, it would probably at best be a lit textured spinning cube - but that''s still awesome if I would be able to get that running. If I could get that running, I could get some other stuff running. It sounds like a great programming experience for me, as I am trying to focus on getting down-and-dirty with my silicon. What would you think about a software renderer? That has to be difficult, but if I were to pull it off... kamelbak

Yes, do take a look at Denthor''s Asphyxia Tuturials. Altough you might want to use C++/Asm instead of Pascal/Asm.

I think it would be a good experience for you to make a renderer from the roots. To few people bother do their own line, polyfiller, clipper, and 3d routines etc. You will have a much better understanding graphics, which will help when you use APIs like Direct3D.

I use to program in Qbasic a long time ago, and I made a spinning cube. But more advanced qb programmers were making ray tracing demo''s.

But all there graphics routines were done in asm, oh well

You''re bringing back old memories. I just loved Denthor''s tuts. I even have a book that I bought which used his tuts as a basis for some examples. I also loved Asphyxia''s demos. Hell, I wanted to join their group. Never made it though...

It would be fun, but i cant easily see large benefit for as "learning experience".. you can waste your time much wiser..
But remeber to KEEP FUN

Offcourse general base ideas are still same and forever, but you can learn that stuff from book about subject very easily too. Usually Books are more detailed than just arbitrary
n-subject very old not supported source code from the oldschoolaz ftp

Best solution to learn is keep yourself interesting, read alot, gain more and more knowledge.. Always work out theory before practice. Do that practice then _alone yourslef after theory and get
amazing "heureka" feeling which will keep you alive and focused about knowledge
