I am looking into buying a scanner and am finding a myriad of good and bad reviews for everything out there, making purchasing decisions difficult. I am looking for a decent to good scanning resolution and good picture quality. Things on the ''latest'' consumer scanners that are unnecessary for me include special media buttons (thx I know how to attach a file to an email, lmao), great software packages, and the ability to scan picture negatives. Anyone here have any advice/luck with anything sub-$200???

LOL, thx anyway. I think I am probably going to check out the epson perfection 1650. We''ll see.

This is spooky! I bought an Epson Perfection 1650 only two weeks ago, after finding it had generally got the best reviews. Its really good quality, and scanning negatives to produce colour images was new to me, and is real cool
Its a good size, and very fast, considering its quality. I''d definately recommend it to you.

Tight!! Yeah it seems like the best price/performance/review ratio. Glad to hear you''re having good luck with it. Out of curiousity, what OS do you run? I am running W2K Prof. I think some of the neg reviews had problems with XP, but I didn''t seem to see anything bad with W2K. Anyway, thx for the feedback.

I haven''t been in the market for a scanner in some time, but I recall the crucial spec is the optical resolution. The higher the better. That''s different from the scanning resolution which is the output.

As far as printed materials go - 300 dpi is plenty - although 600 is optimal. For contrasts - computer monitors range from 72 - 120 dpi, a newspaper comes in at 165 dpi. I don''t recall what a glossy magazine comes in at, I''ve never had call to know, but probably somewhere between 300 and 600.

Epson Perfection 1650:

Optical resolution 1600 dpi x 3200 dpi
Interpolated resolution 6400 dpi x 6400 dpi
Sample max color depth 48-bit color

More than enough for most of us (according to the reviews I read)

Um yeah... I have a 1200 optical dpi scanner that I purchased in 1997 for $1000 - which was quite inexpensive at the time. 1600 dpi x 3200 dpi - that''s insane! How much does that scanner cost?

Most people don''t need that kind of resolution. The benefit of having so much, however, is that it can be reduced to needed levels. Like my father the electrician says in regard to wire - "you can cut it, but you can''t stretch it"

recently bought an HP 4470c; I think it was around $150.

It''s sweet; it does 1200x600 optical.

It was £150, so is that about $300+?
I guess prices have dropped dramatically, especially as that price includes the extra I paid for the version that can scan photo negatives and slides.

It''s sub $200 at a few places online right now. Cnet has a review of it plus all the usaul pricing links. It is out of stock at several places, but the price/performance explains that!

Is that for the standard or the photo edition? It was quite hard to find in the UK too. Maybe Epson are bringing out a new range soon, perhaps you should check their site and wait for that instead.

Amazingly enough, it includes the "35mm Film Strip Adapter" for $179 at accessories.gateway.com. In fact, I think all of the packages for this one include it now.

According to xe.com: Universal Currency Converter I paid about $235.321, which isn''t bad considering most electronics are more expensive over here, VAT, etc...
Plus, I bought it from a large firm, i.e. costs more, but better warranty.
Anyway, it was definately worth it, I hope you find it as useful as me.

Well thanx for all the positive feedback; I hate buying something like that only to find out it is of cheap/poor quality. Thx again.

I bought a UMAX Astra 3600 (or 3400, can''t remember) awhile back, and I can definitely tell you it''s not up to snuff.

Scan quality is poor, the software included is god-awful (crashes, never saves settings, inaccurate cropping) and the scanner itself feels cheap.

The box even gave me a papercut when I tried to open it.

Resist everyone

Yeah - give or take - like you said $235. Great price - especially with the add ons thrown in. How large is the bed?

As for the price drops - I have to say that I learned the hard way that it''s usually better to wait a while after new tech comes out. What costs a $1000 this year will likely only cost $500 next year - so if you can wait - do so. If you can''t, ah, well, I guess you have to bite the bullet sometimes.
