well i''m currently considering to learn typing with a dvorak keyboard layout, but i''d like to hear some opinions about it''s usefulness when it comes to coding. After all dvorak was made to help you type everyday-words fast, but is it also superior to a qwerty layout when it comes to programming with all the non-alphabetic characters you usually have to type?

From what I gather Dvorak was designed to aid typing everyday English words quickly - in so far as typing English goes it should help - that would include coding I presume, since C and C++ use English primarily. It might not be of much help for typing German though.

well i guess i do less then 25% of my typing in german, so thats no problem

thanks for the link beerhunter.
i pasted some hundred lines of code and the moving distance on dvorak is about 20-30% shorter and and i''m 30-40% more on the homerow even in very math-heavy code that consists of more non-alphabetical characters then alphabetical ones.

well i guess it might be worth to learn it then

But figure that unless you have a long piece of code lined out exactly in your head, you won''t gain a huge amount really in relation to total coding time as most normal programmers need to pause every now and then to rearrange things in their heads. Sure, most of use could type up the quake code in a couple of days, maybe less, if we were given a transcript, but none of us could do it and have it work in ten times that time.
