This has been puzzling me for a while. How do you ''write'' a programming language? For instance, how did Larry Wall create Perl? Assembly? Lower level than that? Or do you have to use another language to create that language? If the latter is the case, what language was Perl written in? C? Just wondering.

I think you might be confused by the difference between designing a programming languages and implemeneting a programming language.

When you actually design a language, you don''t deal with other languages, at least not directly, you might borrow ideas from the other languages thouhg. When to design and write the language definition, you use a lot of mathemetical stuff that I won''t get into(it''s things like Backus-Naur form, and context-free grammers) And then you have to define syntax and symantics ...etc.

To actually write an implementation of a language however, you would likely use other languages, and usually assembly language for optimization.

The Perl interpreter and the runtime environment is written in C, yes.

I can''t guaranty it but I think so. Although, it might be written in something else but as far as I can tell, the Linux perl interpreter was written in C. Had to compile it on a distro I was testing for work that get all packages in source format to optimise code for your system...
