They tie you down to the tracks, and go.

Royal Robbins, famous ground breaking climber of the ''50s, ''60s and ''70s, did some train hopping in his youth. One time he decided to jump from the roof of a freight train heading one direction to the roof of a freight train heading in the opposite direction. After doing it once, he wisely decided to not try that stunt again.

gaah! THat''s pretty bad. I tried just getting on a train and it was only going like 25mph (41kph?) and I was too afraid to jump on. My friends got on when it was only going like 20...the damn thing was accelerating when I tried getting on. Now I couldn''t imagine how dangerous that would be. That guy has balls...or no brain.

Or he uses his balls as his brain. It''s damn dangerous to do, and for what?!?! What is the point?!?!

Possibly for the same reason, skaters do a 30 foot drop and try and land it, to see if they can

Go home to your mother, doesn''t she ever watch you? This isn''t some communist daycare centre, tell your mother i hate her, tell your mother i hate you

What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared, to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heartrending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottom of his training shoes.

No, Skaters do that to impress the audience :D

But there usually isn''t much of an audience when you jump on a train...

You'd definitely have to know how to duck and roll.

Apparently even that wasn't enough for the pro climber.

It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.

I remember a long time ago, when I was in Highschool, me and my friends were standing RIGHT next to a train as it was moving. We were facing the direction that the train was coming from, so it was coming towards us (we were standing to the side, of course). I decided to reach out and touch the train as it was moving... which was fine... but suddenly something sticking out from the train hooked onto the bag I was wearing on my back (school bag), and it dragged me a fair distance before I took my bag off and stopped being dragged.

I never saw the bag again... and I had to replace the text-books that were in there. Moral of the story: train hopping just isn''t my thing.

There are no hobos in the subway system of my city.

Just the other night, for lack of thrills, I guess, one of the local newsreel crew guys scared a dog onto the rails to tape it being smushed and they showed it on the 9 o''clock news. How cheap can you get? A guy train hopping would''ve made a cooler segment.
"Beware", said I.

Well, the point would be to see if you can do it, see what it''s like, and see how hard it is. His decision to do it was based on the slow speed of both trains. He figured it would be rather easy. As it turned out, despite the very slow speed of both trains, he nearly lost it upon landing. And so he decided he would refrain from that again. He still did train hopping, before and after that incident.

Actually, I was thinking of hooking up with some hobos so they could show me the ropes.

Some of you seem to think that by train hopping I mean jumping on and off moving trains, which, although it looks fun, is not what I''m referring to. I mean illegaly hitching lifts on freight trains by stowing away on carriages.

There are 10 types of people in this world - those who understand binary and those who don''t.
