Is there a faster way for rendering Windows fonts than GDI, without using DirectX 8?

I guess the first question should be is that your real bottleneck?

What are you doing that requires extremely fast font rendering?

Just that GDI has a reputation for being slow. I don''t know whether it is a big deal or not. But I would think anything D3D could offer would be more elegant.

DirectX doesn't have any font rendering capabilities at all - that's too high-level a concept. There is something in D3DX (I believe) for rendering fonts, but I can't comment on it's speed (having never used it).

If you find GDI is too slow, you can try one of the Type Type libraries like FreeType. I don't know if they're faster either (heh, I'm a lot of help, aren't I? ) but it's just a matter of profiling both renderers...

If I had my way, I'd have all of you shot!

I''ve never tried GDI font rendering, but I''ve heard that GDI is just plain slow so I try to avoid it. I''ll give FreeType a try also.

Thanks.
