Why the hell are banks only open until 4 oclock on weekdays, and closed on weekends? How the fuck am I supposed to ever get a chance to cash my god damn paychecks? argh!!!! I''m going to start my own bank, and keep it open 24 hours a day. Of course, the FDIC probably won''t approve of it, since we''ll actually be open when people need to use it... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Strike not the drums of war; I shall heed the clarion no more.

Well, that used to be the case everywhere, but banks are getting better. What bank do you go to? If they really have hours like that, you should find a new bank. Commonwealth and Commerce usually have better hours (I go to a Commonwealth bank, which is open to around 7 pm on weekdays, with Saturday and Sunday hours, and is located inside the supermarket where I work).

You could use the ATM, or get your employer to use a direct deposit system.

Hey, maybe your movie star banks are open crazy hours, but we in Springfield are simple folk. We like our cars fast, and our banks closed.

Key, HSBC, and citibank.

They all have "Bankers Hours".

it''s bullshit, because I want to go see a movie tonight, and I can''t cash my paycheck until tomorrow.

EXCEPT, I HAVE SCHOOL DURING BANKERS HOURS.

aarghh.

No. I am boycotting ATM''s. They have absolutely no right to charge me to access my own fucking money, ESPECIALLY when they''re already making money from my money (interest), and make tons of money selling my financial data.

Go with Bank of America. They don''t charge you to use their ATMs if you have an account with them and their ATMs are all over the place.

Don''t you have a Visa logo on your bank card? Most movie theaters take Visa.

I havn''t carried cash in years.

When I set up a checking account, my bank gave me a break down of the services charges. It costs (couple cents) more to talk to someone behind the counter than using the ATM. Makes some sense since people cost more money than a machine over the long run, but it goes to show the level of customer service they are willing to give you. If any other business operating like banks, they''d go out of business pretty fast.

er... no banks around here charge service charges... I''ve never even heard of a bank that does that.

But it costs you $5 for every ATM transation, which is a fucking rip off.

In an economics class I took two years ago, we estimated that the banks make around 2 cents per dollar they have every day.

I have 8000 in my bank; if they make 2 cents a day off of it, then they make $160 a day, and $58,400 per year, from my money. And they dare have the audacity to charge me to use my own fucking money?

Down with the banks.

Jeez, I only pay 12 cents or something to use the ATM. That is a fscking ripoff. It costs 16 cents to talk to a teller. Last month I only paid $6.00 in service charges and my record is littered with Interac charges.

It should be pretty obvious why the bank has bad hours. Since people actually work during the day, they are forced to use the ATM. Its all a scam.

Another part of it is that people in the service industry think nobody does anything during the day. Worst seems to be health care workers. They think its no big deal for me to drive across the city and wait for half an hour to gather one vial of blood. Unless people deal with businesses, they are of the opinion that nobody else works.

Hmm, they seem to be making up for one with the other. I''ve had a variety of bank accounts; some carry no service charge, no ATM fee and no minimum balance (college/student accounts), but only provide an ATM card (no cheques; not sure about e-banking). Some require a minimum balance and carry a flat monthly service charge, but provide ATM, VISA (debit/credit), cheques and e-banking. Some carry a flat service charge, have no minimum balance requirements and provide ATM, checking and VISA debit transactions.

While we''re all complaining, check out the situation here in supposedly ''high-tech'' Japan:

Banks open 10am-3pm business days.
ATMs open 8am-7pm business days, 8am-5pm weekends/holidays, no kidding. I have to work my schedule around a damn machine!! Fee is only $1 thankfully. ATMs in major branches are now (since about 9months ago) open 24 hours, but this is still only around 15-20 branches per bank nationwide, and is thought to be a great innovation... I think there are about 30 ATMs in the whole country where your overseas cashcard would be recognized.

And to top it all off, you better make sure you have some cash before Dec 31st, because for three days banks and ATMs everywhere will be completely inactive, no money goes anywhere.

It''s surprising there aren''t more muggings here because every wallet is almost guaranteed to have a reasonable amount of cash in it.

Oh and good luck trying to get a credit card or loan if you''re not a citizen.

Man those are some sucky banks. The bank I use here in England has zero service charges and is open on saturdays as well as having 24/7 automated cashpoints. That''s pretty common here as well I think.

Same for me. I''m surprised at how crappy american banks seem to be. I remember a coupla years ago a lot of banks in the UK were introducing ATM charges, but there was such an angry backlash in the media that it went away very quickly.

Paying a service charge to access an ATM of your own bank, now that''s weird. Isn''t that illegal in the US (it is over here) ?

nothings impossible, this is America!

I think its great to boycot things that are horrible but small. Some of my friends say "its just a couple bucks, who cares?"... a couple bucks today is 10 tomorrow.
They SHOULD be able to do this crap, but we should be able to boycot it. Dont put up with the small stuff people, dont excuse it as not that much of an inconvenience. .sen

Banking rules are pretty loose in America. I had several accounts in different banks, like Oluseyi, and I found that the larger banks charge you more than small local ones. My current bank, a local bank with 2 offices in total, charges for checks, but only if you buy the checks from them, otherwise it''s free. There are no fees for withdrawing money from any ATM, except those that are charged by the owner of the ATM. Some ATM''s here charge from .50 to 2.00 US$, some others don''t charge a thing.
The ATM in my work place is owned by the local Credit Union, and it doesn''t charge anything for any withdrawal even if you don''t do any business with them.
