Hi, all~ I am learning C++ with console mode for months but eager to touch something about graphics. Someone suggest learn winAPI before I go openGL, is that a good idea ? Never end in learning~

And DirectX isn''t ?

"Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it." — Brian W. Kernighan

Well I suppose it is the son of the devil corporation... but its still less evil than OpenGL, and do you know why? because open software == satan''s spawn

OpenGL isn''t software, much less open software. OpenGL is an open standard.

Okay, I''ll respond to the original question: It doesn''t necessarily matter if you know the Win32 API before learning OpenGL as OpenGL never interacts with the Win32 API itself (WGL is the intermediary). If you''d like, you can use GLUT and SDL to hide the Win32 API from you completely (and I would suggest using one of them, since they''ll help you with many things). If you do want to learn the Win32 API though, go ahead, it can''t hurt your ability to develop for Windows.

If you wanna do anything professional like then you must learn Win32 Api.

Then learn OpenGL if you are intersted in 3D Graphics!! Direct3D is a head-ache compared to OpenGL, but if you become familiar with OpenGL and 3D maths in general then Direct3D is easy to pick up.

After that learning Direct Input and Direct Play will round up your game programming skills.

SDL could be used as an alternative to the windows API

Dev-c++ is perfect for win32api gdi(and opengl and directx). Much less dinero also (free), if you can''t afford microsoft c++.
Much more compact in size, installation is around 10Mb, where MSC-C++ is 150Mb+ Go figure. It''s all that MFC class crap.

I hate it when this happens. You get like 50 different answers and you don''t know which one to "try". It sounds like you know as much as I did when I started dx. I haven''t even dipped my fingers in opengl b4, so I can''t say anything about that, but I started learning DX without any understanding of winapi. I still have almost no understanding of winapi. I would suggest getting Windows Game Programming for Dummies. It takes you step by step how to make a window, and it looks very confusing and discouraging, but just copy line for line what it says when it shows you the first full source code to make a window, and thats all you need to know. In fact, I think I still copy word for word the source code from that book when I start a game

very simple, if you plan on going DX, don''t worry about it. Now I can''t say the same for OpenGL, but it doesn''t sound much different.
