After making a game or two, I gave them to my buddies who run WinXP. I run 98SE and they run perfectly on my system. The games would just crash the system. I think this has to do with the fact the XP won''t allow memory protection to be turned off. It won''t allow near pointer calls. So anyway, I''m looking to start programming with MinGW. I want to use the lowest level graphics interface as possible. I don''t want to mess around with DX and OpenGL if I don''t need to. All I want to do is set the VESA mode and write pixels to the screen as quickly as possible, just like I did in DOS. How would I do this with MinGW?

Allegro is a good lowlevel (write pixeldata to buffer) library. OpenPTC (?) is another.

Allegro must use something to do that. I didn''t use Allegro in DOS, I don''t see why it''s necessary in Windows. I suppose I could just take it apart and see how it works.

Have your friends install the compatibility layer on winXP and then rightclick on the executable of the game and select run in Win98 compatibility layer...

It worked for me when I wanted to play Syndicate, Shivers I, Shiver II, Myst, The Sword Of Shannara, and many more... Heck, it even worked for Out Of This World( a verry old DOS game )...

Do you think DOS compatability will last forever? I hope it does, but can you play newer dos games that use SVGA like Duke Nukem 3d or Shadow Warrior?

Maaaan.... Out of This World(or Another World, on the Amiga)... I remember that perfectly. Used to play it in a friend''s house, before I had a PC. That thing had an amazing intro scene.

Allegro uses DirectX in Windows or just plain GDI calls.
It''s not as low-level as most people think, it seems. It has some great functions for pretty low level access.
But on the other hand it has a bunch of higher leveled functions as well.
It''s a great library, as it has a API for basicly everything that you would have to change between platforms.
