I was thinking... Why not to connect a helix of helicopter in the place of the wheels on a mountaing bike? The speed acquired in the heavy gear of bike could not be able to make the machine lift from ground? Clearly, it would have the back rotor connected too, to prevent the bike turning. How much my idea is impossible??? Any enginner opnion? [edited by - L-Tryosine on October 9, 2002 1:25:29 PM]

WEll, I think the problem here is that you would need to connect LARGE helixs to where the wheels would be, and then you would need to compensate for the added weight. After all of that, you still have to remember that cars are pretty heavy givin their engine power, so you would need to find a way to make the car weigh less. Then you would need to change the seating arrangement so that the weight would be balanced in the center so that you don''t have to compensate for which side has more weight on it.

I''m sorry black_mage_s I was forgoting to tell that my idea is on a moutain bike, using just the legs moviment of a person.

In that case... I doubt it would be possible. You would need to have an extremely strong individual, and an extremely light bike, with extremely light helixs

You''re missing the critical component. E.T.

Another problem would be that odds are you would have your legs cut off if you ever got to a high enough speed to take off.

Ok, i really expected lot of impossibility, but lets look closer. A human with weight of 70-80 kgs (sorry about kg, I´m brasilian)... A bike have 20 kg, with the helix and gears goes to... 60 kgs (very light material). So, about 150 kgs to lift. Real helicopters have 30 times this weight or more. Imagine a REAL heavy gear, heaver than the heaviest of the 21st gear of a mountain bike, so slow and hard leg moviment, quick helix run.

Fly would really be the problem? May the problem lies on control and equilibrate this machine on air, but lift from ground... Comen on guys, Remenber those little plastic helicopters from our infance...

Not the real issue. Even with a good speed, moving the helixs, which weigh far more than wheels is.

I think you would have more luck trying to make a pedal powered plane. I am going to try to build one when the hours in the day are increased to somewhere around 50.

It is correct to say that if this machine have 30 times less mass than a helicopter, it would rotate the helix 30 times slower than a normal helicopter?

I weigh about 50.8 kg ( 112 lb ).
A bike even with light weight materials weighs quite a bit.
I had a BMX bike that was ultra light and was rigged up to have a very high gear for long distance biking. The BMX is smaller and would be lighter then it''s mountain bike ( which I hate ) counterpart.

I was thinking of the possibility of building a bike right out of carbon fiber. That reduces the weight huge amounts. My BMX has a seat/seat post that weighs ounces. Unfortunately, carbon fiber doesn''t bend and snaps if too much force is applied.

The weight of your helix comes next. Much of the weight of a bike is the wheels, unless the rims are carbon fiber as well. Could you use carbon fiber for you helix material ?

Even if weight was kept to a minimum, and a heavy gear, I don''t think you would get enough rotation out of the helix. The person riding it would have to be light weight and in very good physical condition. If it was possible at all, it would be a very short ride of only a few seconds. It''s alot of work moving that much air over a long period of time.

The aircraft that use pedal power work well because you are getting some lift from the aerodynamic design. This saves alot of pedalling, and if it can glide, you have time to rest as well.

About 1/3 of effort are just to accelerate the helix to point of take off, so, in skyes the effort would drop 33% (inertia), you pedal just to win the air resistance on the helix. On real helicopters, if the engine are totally shut down is possible to land the helicopter because the inertia.
The hard thing about it is that the energy must be aplied too on back rotor, to prevent the poor pilot getting a real experience of rotation on Y axis =)
