I just installed Mandrake Linix Version 9.0 . And I can''t find any drivers for my Geforce 4 Mx 440. Thanks

Didja look at nvidia.com?

Edit: Ah, yes. I forgot Nvidia hasn't gotten their Mandrake 9.0 drivers out yet. Well, you have two choices.

#1: Wait for NVIdia to release them, which should be any time now. I don't remember them taking this long with the 8.2 drivers.

#2: Compile your own. You download the GLX rpm and then the kernel source RPM, down at the bottom. Then you build the kernel source into the regular kernel driver rpm. It's tricky, but I was able to do it so maybe you can to.

I dunno if the rpm I compiled on my machine will work on yours, but I'll send it to you if you just can't get it.

I don''t know about him, but if you asked me to program my own drivers, I think I''d have more success peeing in the corner of a circular room.

Actually, I''ve seen it done more than once on old Unix boxes. It used to be common with Unix. It requires skill and time but it''s possible to do it. Heck, if I had gotten the job at Matrox that''s what I would''ve been doing. Writing drivers for the new hardware.

Ok I''ll try your drivers. Can you post them on a web site?
Or E-mail(hotmail)?

What? Programming your own drivers? Who said anything about that?

I''d kill myself if I had to write drivers for my GeForce 2. No, you download the source for the drivers from Nvidia and compile it. You don''t have to touch the code.

And here''s the driver!
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/braddabug/linux/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.i586.rpm

You may have to do a right click -> Save Target As... cause the web server apparently thinks its a text file or something. Once you have it just install everything like the readme says.

Good luck!

I Don''t really understand the readme. Can you please tell me what to do?

The nvidia drivers will work for Mandrake 9.0. I did it. Download the NVchooser.sh and run sh ./NVchooser.sh and it will tell you which files to download. For me it said to select the GLX rpm and the kernel.src.rpm and recompile the kernel.

I am very new to Linux and I don''t know like how do anything.Like compileing. Can you please tell me really spacificly becuase I dont know to do anything on Linux yet.

You might as well give compiling the sources a shot. It might just work! To do that, open a console and type this:

rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_kernel_src_blahblah.rpm

if it worked then it''ll put the ready to use RPM (yeah it just creates another RPM for you to worry about) someplace like /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586, at least thats where it put it for me.

Now, you take either the RPM you just made or the one I made along with the GLX rpm and make sure you know where they are. What you''re going to have to do now is boot Mandrake in failsafe mode or something like that. I think that''s one of the choices from that bootloader menu that shows when you first boot the computer. Anyways, you need to make sure X is not running, and failsafe mode doesn''t start X. Handy, aye?

Now that you''re in a 100% command line mode, type this:

rpm -ivh NVIDIA_kernel_blahblah.rpm
rpm -ivh NVIDIA_GLX_blahblah.rpm

just replace the blahblah with whatever teh real filename is.

If all went according to plan, you should have gotten some messages like "Success!" and maybe a "Warning! This driver is closed source! Tainted kernel! Blah blah blah!" if you did then good job. You''re half way there!

Now you get to edit the X config file!

cd (change directory. Same as DOS command, so it shouldn''t be completely forign) into the /etc/X11 and in there should be a file called XF86Config-4. You can use the ''dir'' command to make sure.

now type this:

vim XF86Config-4

What you see now is the mystical tool we call VIM! Go down until you see this line:

driver "nv"

or something that looks remarkably like it. press ''i'' which will put you into ''insert'' mode. Now just change that line to read this:

driver "nvidia"

Now you need to make sure this line in the Modules section:

load "glx"

And make sure that the file doesn''t have these lines:

load "dri"
load "GLcore"

I''ve never had to remove those lines or add the ''load "glx"'' to my file, so i doubt you will have to either. Just make sure you change ''nv'' to ''nvidia'' and you should be set.

NOW, you are 99% done. Reboot the computer (i think the command is ''reboot''), load Linux, and everything *should* work. If not, it''s gonna take a little coaxing to get the drivers to work.

Whew! I should save this as a howto or something!

Where do I get the GLX , you only told me the link to the kernal. And when I type in the first thing you told me to do it say No such file or directory.
CoOsMo
CoOsMo
Or is that one file both of them?
BradDaBug

There are two .rpm''s you need to have. The first is this one:

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.i386.rpm

That''s the GLX one. Whenever I say NVIDIA_GLX_blahblah.rpm that''s the one I mean.

The kernel driver you need is this one:

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.src.rpm

This kernel driver is the one you''ll need to compile.

If its still giving you a "no such file or directory" message make sure you typed in the name of the file EXACTLY like its named. Case and everything. Linux filenames are case sensitive, unlike Windows. And remember when I say ''NVIDIA_kernel_src_blahblah.rpm I really mean replace that with the actual name of the kernel .rpm.

Now here''s some stuff I forgot to mention in my last post:

When you begin to install the rpm''s and edit the config file you''ll need to be logged in as root. Just type ''su'' in the command prompt and then enter your root password.

I also forgot to mention how to save the config file and quit VIM. When you''re done editing, press ESC. Then press ''w'' and then enter. That saves the file. Now press ''q'' and enter. that quits VIM and you can reboot.
