Why initialization failed?

Hi, I''m a beginner in openGL. I downloaded lesson 9 of NeHe tutorials, compiled it and ran it. After I clicked yes to enter full screen mode, my screen turned to black but soon returned to original desktop. The popped up error is: Initialization Failed. Would you please tell me why this problem happened and how to fix it? Thank you
