Original Post
Not long ago my friend told me about this thing you can do to yourself to give you a short, mildly high-like feeling. Since I don''t do drugs, and never will, I was curious; because this was something that didn''t involve chemicals or anything of the like.
What you do is the following:
1) Bend over at the knees
2) Breathe very deep and fast about two dozen times
3) Lean up quickly
4) Cup your hands over your throat to slow down (or stop?) breathing
5) Then you pass out and dream or something
Well, I know that sounds stupid, but I have heard it is sort of fun, but no one could tell me just how unsafe it was. So I never did it, I was scared.
Can someone inform me please? Should I just not try it? What''s it called? Any information on this or similar practices would be appreciated.
Thanks.
If you do it, you will die.

Well, if he does it often enough, he''ll end up being one :
Main Entry: mo·ron

Bad idea. Very bad idea.
1 and 3 together. You''re decreasing the flow of blood to the brain. I have a medical condition (nervous system disorder) that does the same thing, except for not having to do it quickly. It can take me anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours to get up safely from a chair or lying down because of it.
Not taking my time can cause the following.
A rather unpleasant light headedness. Vertigo. Immediate loss of consciousness. Feeling weak and ill for hours.
If you have a weak heart you could literally cause your heart to stop by doing that and die. If done quickly enough, the heart ends up pumping air instead of blood. The heart thinks that the blood pressure has gone up drastically and stops. If you''re lucky, you just pass out and the heart will start again. If not...
2 decreasing the amount of oxygen in the body. Can make you light headed.
4 choking yourself? I don''t think I need to mention why that''s a bad idea.
5. If you really want to pass out, make sure that you do it somewhere safe. You don''t really want to be standing, and you want to fall into something soft. Cutting your head on things from falling is no fun. If you manage to cut your scalp, you''ll end up looking like a murder scene.
Recreational drugs are safer. Not a good idea, but this "technique" is an even worse idea.

This is very dangerous! Asphyxia is very dangerous. It''s very easy to pass the "limit" and if nobody is around (when going over the limit) you will die. Never tamper with autonomous body functions. In the long term practicing, this "technique" will cause brain damage.
Have you tried drinking a few beer''s instead?? Or maybe falling in love?
I used to get light headed from making my face exceedingly red. I''d also see spots and stuff. It wasn''t terribly enjoyable. Once I passed out because of it, and that wasn''t fun either. I just fell over and woke up later, having not existed for a minute or so. I wouldn''t recommend doing this either.
When I broke my leg, they gave me that Nitrous Oxide stuff in the Ambulance. Apparently I consumed about twice as much as the average person my size usually does ^^
Break your leg instead, I can only assume that''s what it''s like, but it was sure good.

haha, oddly enough, this is exactly what we used to do back in the day at summer camp for kicks.
let me clarify a bit about how it is done.
1) person a sits down with their head between their knees and breathes deeply for about 30 seconds.
2) person a then proceeds to stand up very fast, while person b puts his hands on either side of person a''s neck and squeezes (note: this is NOT choking him, it is just cutting off the blood flow to the brain for a short period of time).
yes, i will admit i have done it, and it makes for a rather interesting experience. it is really not as dangerous (if done correctly) as you may think, as it is basically the same thing that your body does automatically when you faint. (you hyperventalate, and your neck muscles constrict which cuts off blood flow to your brain).
the most important step of the process is the guy who is appointed to sqeeze the sides of the neck. usually you can tell the person is passing out by their eye lids fluttering, after which point you should let go of their neck.
one word of caution though... i remember one time when the person who was squeezing the neck held on for a little too long (probably about 2 seconds after the guy had passed out) and the guy went into seizures. it was pretty crazy as the guy instantly dropped him, and everybody jumped on him and tried to wake him up. oddly enough, there were no ill side effects after he actually woke up, but it did cause us to stop doing that for a while =)

Yes, I too have seen this done at camp. Band camp, in fact.
Alamo''s got it basically right. The bottom line is ALWAYS HAVE ANOTHER PERSON AROUND WHEN YOU DO IT. There is definitely a chance that something could go wrong, and immediate medical attention would be needed.
Here''s how we did it:
Lean over as far as you can and breath really deep for about 30 seconds.
Stand up as fast as you can, and a person standing behind you simultaneously puts you in a bearhug. We grabbed under the armpits and around the chest, and squeezed as tight as you can (well, without crushing a rib, of course).
If all goes well, your body will go limp, and the person behind you will set you down onto bedding already on the floor.
Granted, I''ve never had this done to me, but it''s sorta fun to watch.
One time, my friend passed HIMSELF out in study hall. Thumbs on the sides of the neck, cutting off bloodflow to the brain. He woke up about 10 seconds later, it was really funny. Looking back, I guess I''m glad nothing happened, cause I would have been in HUGE trouble for letting him do it.

This reminds me of something!
It was along time ago, when me and my brother were just kiddies. Church had just let out and we were leaving. My brother basically began to take off running down the aisle, so I grabbed him by his shirt collar and held him back. He kept tugging against me then suddenly fell down on the floor. I kicked him, trying to get him to stop being stupid and get up. He didn''t, so I just left him.
A little bit later he found me and my mom. He started crying. "I fainted in front of everyone!" Uh oh.
I guess the shirt collar cut off the circulation to his brain and he passed out. Good thing he didn''t die or go into seizures or anything. I wonder if anyone checked on that kid laying there in the middle of the aisle?
Later he said it was like everything started turning blue, then he just woke up there on the floor.

Alamo and andromeda, this is exactly what I''m talking about. Thanks for the constructive advice from anyone that gave it.

Do a search on auto-erotic asphyxiation. Makes you wonder just what things your friend is into.
Stuff like this is definitely not cool. A classmate of mine died two months ago because of asphyxiation (a week before our senior year started).

All this is, is a quick hyperventalate followed by pressure on the carotids. Choking yourself has nothing to do with it.
All you're doing is putting yourself in a sleeper hold. Not as safe as taking a nap or sitting around in a chair, but certainly not at all likely to be fatal.
Still, I'm not sure why anyone would do such a thing voluntarily.
But, at least it isn't as lame as trying to smoke nutmeg.
