We have an opportunity for programmers with Visual Basic and Visual C++ experience, and with a background in computer graphics. The position is in Orlando, Florida, with an industry leader in the field of laser light show software. Our software is used at theme parks (Disney, Sea World), special events (Olympics, New Years Eve, World''s Fairs), planetariums (Hayden Planetarium) and many other locales around the world. For more detailed information, please go directly to our webpage at http://www.pangolin.com/jobs_pangolin.htm. If you are VERY interested, there is a sample project listed at this page. You can contact us to see if you would like to do this sample project. Successful completion of the sample project helps us identify serious, knowledgeable candidates. Thank you for considering this opportunity. William_Benner@msn.com

I looked at your sample project. It seems a little to easy. Just about every book that teaches someone how to create Windows apps, shows how to do all the items.

For your more ''challenging'' criterion, you may want to add something of much more diffucult type of programming challenge. You don''t have to and because it''s already publicly available you may choose not too. But it would help you evaluate candadites better.

Hello Gorky,

I agree that this *seems* like an easy project to do. But you wouldn''t believe what we have gotten as a result of this request...

For one thing, we are looking not only for "does it draw a line" or "does it provide an undo", but also exactly how these things are laid out on a screen, how did they approach different aspects, etc. We are purposely vague to see what direction they will head in. Also, since we are asking for the source code, we get a chance to see their coding style, use of objects where appropriate, etc.

So it seems easy on the surface but it has proven to be a very effective tool. If someone says that they are interested in the job, but won''t take the time to do the test, that tells you something right there.

It is really a great opportunity for someone with moderate graphics programming skill. Because our industry is relatively small, this is a chance to be a big fish in a small pond. (Anyone out there feeling like a minnow in the huge sea which is the computer graphics field?) And to apply modern computer graphics techniques to this field would be a boon.

Anyone interested?

I am actually very interested. Only problem I have is the relocation. Just bought a house (6 months ago) in Tampa and my wife loves it here.

I could do the project, I have no gripes about that, just the moving part. We currently run a Web publishing buisness and do a lot of programming and external editor work (i.e. database, c/c++, visual basic, java, html, cgi, perl, python, flash, etc...)

So, the question is, should I make the program ?? Since I absolutely have no inclination to move? Is there anyway to out source and maybe do weekly or bi-weekly or monthly or whatever meetings?

I also have questions about salary, but I''ll wait to see if it the non-moving part is even feasible.

I understand that you just bought a house. Here is my thinking. We could possibly do some telecommute thing.

This arrangement could work if you are a self starter and such. The actual salary would depend on several factors including your experience, etc.

Why don''t you go ahead and do the project. Let me see what you can do. Also please forward your resume. Send it all to William_Benner@msn.com.

And take your time! This isnt a time test. Some people spend 4 hours on it and it shows. Given what you see on our web site and the description, lets see what you come up with.

Looking forward to it!

I noticed from your sample project you require it to be completed using Visual Basic. Can the project be completed using Visual C++?

It's good to be an outcast, you don't need to explain what you do, you just do it and say you don't belong there.

dont wanna be a picker or anything but the first part was done in less then 45 minutes and i even added the line width and fill style buttons

ill do the secondary options and then show it to you heh ( i had nothing to do today cause im tired of 3d programming

Hello all and thanks for responding and taking the time.

As I said, many people can complete the project in 45 minutes... But what does it look like? Are the tools accessed by menus or by buttons with icons? Does it look like a drawing program? How does the undo work? Does it undo the entire stroke of the freehand tool or just one point? (Also, no offense, but we don''t use line width...)

Take a look at the web site www.pangolin.com. Take a look at the presentation of the product. There are several screen shots and stuff. Since we are looking for UI guys, and guys that do coding behind the UI, the UI better look like something. The actual code behind the UI is the easy part of this test.
