Mega task for experienced programmer
Advertisement
Original Post
I have started a team to develop off of Quake 2 Open Source, which therefore means the ability to modify the graphics etc..... and basically I have come up with a list of features that need to be implemented, and will take an experienced coder to implement them all, I am not going to explain what the game is about as that information is not required however I will tell you what I plan to have implemented:
Bump mapping
Particle System, which is easily customizable
Lens-flare
Terrain which can also have building etc... on
Pixel and Vertex Shaders
Extended engine power, character models hitting 4000 polys
Fog, Haze, Rain, and Snow all different weather effects
Photo-relistic lightning
Volumetric dust and clouds
Massive outdoor environments
Dynamic shadows
Advanced lighting
Reflections/mirrorsDestructable terrain, environment, maps
As you can see this will be a mammoth task, I''m not 100% sure on the terminoloy etc.... but it will be very good for experience, anyone interested contact me on MSN: RobJohnson60@hotmail.com.com
or if you dont have that leave your contact info to any software that you have that I will be able to contact you on thank you. Ask me any questions you want apart from about the game unless you speak to me on chat then I will tell ya.
lol, I know its gonna be a very powerful project, and like most projects things will be cut, so that people can play it but it is aimed at the higher end of the market and there will be the option to turn settings off, also it will be D3D. If you would like to help e-mail me at johnno19@btinternet.com, even if its only 1 of the things in the list that will be helpful thnx

Quake 2 was written using OpenGL. Plus all those features you want, you''re better off starting from scratch anyway...
If I had my way, I''d have all of you shot!

Well, try licensing the Doom 3 engine!
Don''t forget that you cannot distribute your games commercially using the Quake 2 engine. So you will not make any money out of it, and you still have to pay for the 10 professional programmers who can do that whitin a small 3 year development frame. Also, I saw the Quake 2 code, it''s very complex, but still it''s whole design could not fit into category that you want. By the way, if you do all this, you can win the ENGINE OF CENTURY award, and take it away from John Carmack. It won''t be easy

Actually, AFAIK (someone correct me if Im wrong) there are no rules at all against releasing a quake 2 engine game commercially, it just has to be open source. Also if its anything like the quake 1 engine, you can buy a closed source licence for it for aobut $10000.
No sense doing all that to the Quake 2 engine. Anyway, the Quake 2 source is not pretty by any means. Since it is programmed from a top-down approach, altering it in the ways you mention would mean replacing most of the code itself.
Still, the Quake 2 engine is not a bad engine. If you want to make a free game, by all means do so. Instead of worrying about having state of the art graphics, I would focus on good gameplay.
Another option you could take would be to use the Unreal 2003 Engine and make a MOD. Since the game is meant to be free, then this would be your best choice. The engine has most of the features that you want. UnrealED is pretty good too, and the game comes with a version of Maya that lets you make your own game models. There are plenty of people who would join a MOD team. Though, I would suggest asking for people in MOD developement communities. Not many people around here are into making MODs.
