There is no such thing as ''American English''. There is English, and there is English spelt wrong.
You have theatre, we have theater. Colour/Color. Telly/TV. Thatcher/Reno.

*sigh* Seriously...who cares? I mean, the whole point of language is to convey ideas in an organized and structured way so that they can be understood. Both "American English" and English fit this criteria so what's the problem? They are both spoken by a large population of people, and what's more, someone who speaks "American English" can still be understood by someone who speaks English and vise-versa. It's pointless to try and convince one or the other to change so why try?
EDIT: Spelling...oops :o

You know, I don''t care. As long as the other guy understands me and as long as I don''t look like a total moron, I don''t see why we should care about how we spell some words in some countries.
The problem is, here, I often interchange center and centre, because as a french Canadian, I don''t know which one to use. Oh damn!... now I just look like a total moron all of a sudden!
Could someone also light me up on that please (stuff about centre)?

The fact is, language is constantly changing and evolving. The English spoken in the 12th century is quite different from the English we speak now, in fact so different that most modern speakers would not understand most of it. Changes in language are caused by many things with some of the most notable being infuluences from other languages and culture, and the migration of speakers to different geographical areas. Something like 60% of the words in the modern English language are derived from Latin. English has had influences from Latin, French, Greek not to mention it''s roots in the old Germanic languages like Anglo-Saxon. Whenever a group of people split off and migrate to another geographical area, the language they carry with them will tend to develop in a different way than the language spoken by the people they split off from, this is why American and Australian dialects of English have not only differences in accent, but also differences in vocabulary and spelling. This is going to sound funny, but England did not invent English no more than did any other country. The language is a mixture of many influences with it''s root in the Germanic languages of northern Europe, in fact most of the languages spoken in Europe and part of south Asia can be traced back to a parent language called Indo-European, but now we are getting into theory. The point is that languages will evolve and Oxford English and American Standard English have differences, mainly in spelling and pronounciation, but there are some grammatical differences as well. Someone from England may say that the way American use the language is wrong, but I sumbit this: What would King James from the 16th century say about the way English is spoken in London today? Or Chaucer, what would he think? Would he even understand you?

Attention all macintosh users!
quote:There''re much more common mistakes out there. Worry about them first. "Could of" being used instead of "could''ve", "there''s" in place of "there''re", and the confusion of "your"/"you''re" and "there"/"they''re"/"their".
