The poor fellow! His car is apparently overheating. Let''s diagnose it! What are the symptoms?

My car used to overheat all the time. I just put a few cubes of dry-ice in the fuel tank - hasn''t overheated since!

Add an extra fan.

So far this is what I know. The radiator wasn''t getting water because the thermostat was clogging up the cooling system. The fan for the radiator was also broken. The fuse for the fan broke. Both things were fixed, but it still gets really hot.

So you''re saying the thermostat has been replaced and now the fan runs when it is supposed to, right? But you''re also saying it still overheats.

How old is the car? Does the waterpump make noise? Is it leaking anywhere when hot? If so, where is it leaking? Does it get hot during idle only? Or does it get hot on the freeway at cruising speed?

One of my cars does the exact same thing. Its a 1992, and it only overheats when its idle (or when I''m sitting at a stop-light). The temp actually goes down when I accelerate. I''ve recently had the radiator flushed, the thermostat replaced, and have verified that the radiator fan is working properly. I''m thinking it might be the water pump. Any ideas?

I just got it ''fixed'' today so I haven''t been able to diagnose the problem. It''s a brown 1988 Toyota Tercel.

How can I check the water pump?

It cools when you are moving because you''re getting better airflow over the radiator. The implication is you are either low on water, or your fan is inadequate, or your radiator has become inefficient from clogged tubes and/or the fins have broken loose from the tubes.

Listen to it. If it sounds like it is rattling, you've got shot bearings, and it likely is not pumping effeciently. And it will probably start leaking soon.

If water is dripping from the waterpump, then it's already leaking, and it needs to be replaced.

Perhaps nes8bit thought you meant Peter Pan.

There''s your problem right there.

My car overheated a lot from leaking coolant. So I bypassed the heater core cause it was broken and too much of a hassle to replace. It cooled down. Later I took off the air conditioner belt as well. It was too much of a hassle and pure novelty anyway since I never used the air conditioning during the summer anyway. It''s a very energy efficient car now. If it doesn''t entertain me or make the car go, it''s not connected.

Then my car started getting too hot again. The fan didn''t work. So I bought a new one and it cooled down again. But I also fixed the relay that turned on the fan cause it wasn''t working.

Now it''s getting pretty hot again and sounds like a lawnmower. But I suspect that''s because it''s running on 3 out of four cylinders. It was nice enough to break down just before a nice long 4 day holiday weekend. I can tell which of the wires are working though because the sparks shoot off where the wire connects to the plug.

I fixed that though. I rolled the damn thing into the street and I''m now driving one of the three VW bugs (old ones but nicely fixed up) by mom owns. I''ll put my car back together later.

The End

Ben

That''s always very assuring. Especially for someone that drives at least 50 miles every day that has an engine with 120k miles on it.

Well, it''s a Toyota so it''s probably more likely to survive to 200,000 miles than my Buick.

Just invest in bubble gum and duct tape and you should be okay. Now would probably be a good time to start saving for a newer car though.

Why is it that people who are into old VW''s always have more than one? My dad used to be into VW Kharmen Gia''s he had 3 of them at one time. Bizarre.
