Has it been a while?

It seems like the trend today is the creation of scripting languages, or byte-code languages. More portable languages. It seems like it''s been a while since any major compiled-only languages have been created. C++ was created in the late 80''s. What major compiled languages have come onto the scene since C++?

What do you mean by the trend *today*? Which languages are you specifically thinking of?

Define "compiled-only". Is Java compiled only?

C++ is actually fairly good at being a static language, for what that's worth. Obviously, there are valid criticisms aimed at it. Languages like D and Felix try and address some of those criticisms, but they're very new languages, which gets back to what you mean by "today". If something is very new, then it's completely unlikely to be "major" yet. It takes several years for a language to really start picking up.

I believe C++ was created in 1968 by Bjarn Soustrup(sp?). At least that''s what my C++ book tells me. I don''t have a link or something but that''s what I was told.

Bjarne Stroustrup.

If it really tells you that, throw in the garbage.

Way too many people believe what they are told.

For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can''t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don''t remain stone- written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command or faith a dictum. I am my own God. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us -- Charles Bukowski

Nope. C++ was made by Bjarne around 83' (a bit earlier actually, but the that's when the name was invented). You're probably confusing C++ with Simula-67, the language C++ was based on (C++ is an improvement of C using the concepts from Simula). Simula-67 was done in 1967/1968 by Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard.

EDIT: Here is timeline for the development of Object Oriented languages. I haven't read the whole thing yet so I can't vouche for it being 100% accurate, but it looks alright so far.

"Today" means the present. I''m talking about languages like perl and java, and other scripting languages like php and python. I use C++ but there are some thinks that bug me about it, like it seems like a lot of stuff was put in as an afterthought, or maybe it''s backwards compatible with C. I like C a lot, like working at that lower level, but at the same time, I wish it had something a little nicer than character arrays for strings, and stuff like that. So I pretty much use C++, but it looks like C with ocassional use of std::string and std::vector.

Java is (for this discussion) a byte-code language. What I should have said instead of "compiled only" was "compiled to machine code".
