Game Engine features (????)

Hello to you reader... I have a very general question to make. What a game engine''s features must be ??? And i mean not for commercial use... First let me shrink to generalization of the question a bit. What must an OpenGL (this doesn''t mean something) first person shooter game engine provide so it can be classified as a good one ? Again a non commercial game engine. What i mean with that? That it doesn''t go the fight with Quake''s game engine or any other commercial one. And to give you a little hint about what i''m looking for, some possible answers can be: 1) Must be fast. 2) Must be expandable 3) Must inluse BSPs or Octrees etc. 4) Must have particle systems 5) Must have lighting calculations. etc. etc. So if you have some thing in mind please tell it. Because, some times it is harder to learn what you have to learn, rather than actually learn it. I''m not something like a guru on game programming, or what every you tell me i''ll implemented, but i want to have a general idea on the subject. And for the more curious of you, i have made some steps on the subject, by making two apps for my (someday) game, one is a level builder and the other is for terrain generation and manipulation. And the reason i''m asking something like that, is because my development has stucked because i don''t know what must i implement now. No that i have done it all, but i don''t know what''s more important to do next. The things i''ve done so far are : 1) Lightwave model loading for all the models in the game 2) BSP trees and models for visibility determination for in-door enviroments 3) Lightmap calculations for point and spot lights (NO RADIOSITY) with shadow for static objects (this have a little problem) 4) some others things with little importance like texture loading etc. 5) Collision detection with the static enviroment 6) A level builder with all the above features to build game levels in a some kind real-time way 7) I can''t remember anything else... Thanks in advance for your attention. HellRaiZer

Look here....
OGRE 3D Graphics Engine

Note this is a graphics engine, a game engine would require a lot of other things. IMO it would need-

All of the above.
Decent networking code.
A good audio engine, using 3d positional audio, with support for hardware effects(EAX etc..)
Seamless and robust integration into the OS.
High level control over features (possibly using a scripting engine).
Good collision and physics engine.
Good input code (joystick, mouse, keyboard), force feedback.
Scriptable AI implementation.
Support for latest file formats. (md3, mp3...)

-And probably more that i''m not thinking of right now.

I would never want to go the fight with Quake''s game engine!

A solid, extensible GUI system might be one to look at, if you don''t already have one. There''s an excellent series of articles here on GameDev somewhere covering the design+creation of such a system.

Other than that, maybe some kind of scripting engine, or a mod/plugin system.

Why not just use the quake engine? You can do a lot of kickass stuff with it.

...and that''s how I successfully lead operation Desert Storm.

I read some articles that mentioned that publishers were more inclined to help a project or give points to it if it used an existing technology. But doesn''t the licencing and all cost a whole lot too? Seems a bit antagonistic. If you could develop your own game engine wouldn''t it be better?

Hello again...

Thanks for the replies.
And the last question "Why you are writing a game engine?", i think it has an obvious answer. Because i want to make "some kind of" a game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, this will not be commercial, and i don''t have the money or the need to buy a ready-to-use game engine. I am ONE person who like games very much, and since i started this game engine i realized that i like to make games even more. And when i say ONE i mean i am alone on this and i don''t care if it gonna take years to finish. I like the path to the goal, primarly, and the goal itself secondary. I don''t know if it makes any sense !!!!!!
