and allegro''s a good one, but personally I use SDL.

There is nothing wrong with starting with Allegro. Using a good wrapper can really get you started with making a game. Later you may find the wrapper limiting, but you will probably have the programming foundation there that you can switch to another or make your own with relative ease. That being said, another to look at is CDX. It''s a DX7 2D wrapper that works very nicely.
