Hi, I''m trying to write some ''Generator'' components for my engine. They are components which should, given some named parameters (and possibly a source image), generate textures every frame. I''m going to write a generator to create textures out of .avi files (so I can movietexture things ), and I''ve already written textures to modulate brightness and scroll a texture in a given direction. I''m looking for ideas, mainly. Can anyone suggest any other texture ''generators'' that I could write for my engine? Also, I''m looking in particular to do procedural water/lava/slime/whatever, like that in quake/half-life. Could anyone point me to articles on how to do those? Thanks... You might be interested in perlin noise generation, which is excellent for algorithmically-generated textures (among other things).

Scroll all the way down for some example textures generated with that method.

Hope this helps!

I''ve got TrueSpace open and looking at the options for textures

Perlin, Marble, World, chromes, wood, clouds
sphereglo - the outer edges dim into another colour or coloured polka dot(different percentage coverage)
coloured checkered()
coloured brick()
coloured grid()

There is also versions of some of the above except it''s for transparency. So you can have layered transparent(Perlin Noise)
Transparent polkaDot, grid, sphereglo, clouds.

What is being done, in general terms by Carmack et al, is creating a real-time 3DSMax with as many options loaded in as a graphics and CPU chip can bear(Cry, you little silicon bastards!! hehe).

Choosing a few of those options should keep you busy for a bit hehe

Well, if you''re looking for resources on creating textures out of *.avi files, then head over to Nehe''s site (nehe.gamedev.net), and check out tutorial 35. It deals with loading an avi file, and then playing it through a texture which can be displayed on primitives. It''s a nice effect...

Thanks! The perlin noise stuff should be very versatile; I presume that''s how they do the water in quake-engine games.

Any other suggestions? I''ve taken a leaf out of ZoomBoy''s book and looked through Blender for ideas, but I''m not seeing much more (that can be done in realtime, at least)...
