Hia guys! I am considering buying one of those books: 1. Programming Roleplaying Games With DirectX 8.0 2. Isometric Gameprogramming With DirectX 8.0 I am very intrested in RPG''s. And it is the kind of games that I will program in the future. I''m not very intrested in 3d graphics, but rather 2D graphics(aka Diablo II, Ultima Online etc...). I am new to DirectX, but have intermediate knowledge in both C++ and Java. Therefor I know some about Object oriented programming. If I buy the first book, I know that I will teach about how to program a RPG. But what makes me consider not to buy it, is that it contains alot of 3D programming, which I said that I''m not intrested in... If I buy the second book, I will not learn how to program specificly a RPG. But I will probably learn tha techniques of making "fake 3d", 2d graphics and will be able to make a RPG later on anyway... So, I am wondering if my thoughts are right? Which of those books do you guys think will suit me best? Plz, feel free to comment the books from what I have told ya! Thx

I haven''t got my hands on ''Isometric Game programming..'', but I have read ''Programmingn RPG''s w/ DX'' cover to cover (and then some) and I must say, you DEFINITELY need to buy this if your goal is to write a decent game by the end. There are NOT that many good books out right now. I''ve looked through about 10 of them out there. This is the best one right now. Hope this helps.

Ok, thank you. But I yet have a question
How is the part with directX and 2d graphics in the "Programming Role.." book? I mean... Is it much about how to create maps with transition and so on? Or dose it mostly cover 3d and very little 2d?

Thx!

Its awesome for 2d. There is an entire chapter devoted to tile engines first hitting regular tiles, then big bitmapped tiles, then angled tiles. So far, overall that has been the most valuable chapter in the entire book. So believe me, you won''t be dissapointed. You''ll be re-reading that chapter at least 3 or 4 times, probably more.

hmmmm, I think the use of his own Core(lib) still hurts a bit.
you have to look it up always, and probably print it out...

Just to validate that, its a great book and worth reading at all costs. IMHO it is better than Iso but thats just my opp. It does cover a lot of 3D...but a lot of that can also be applied to 2D such as everything thing from minimaps, to collisions, to scripting. Also the 2D section is good. There is a lot of stuff in RPG that isn''t even in Iso and the stuff in Iso is now found a lot online. It is definitly worth reading though.
