im beginning to think that making a custom level building tool for my game is going to be just about as difficult as writing the game engine itself. Do most people write their own level building tool? Or use someone elses tool like worldcraft? If I were to use worldcraft, where would i find some info about how the data is stored in a worldcraft file so that i can convert it into a my-game-specific bsp file? ----- It''''s not my fault I''''m the biggest and the strongest; I don''''t even exercise!

I''ve found that making the editor for a game is MUCH harder than writing the engine itself. There are layers upon layers of geometry manipulation and what not that is associated with making an editor like worldcraft.

To do it the "easy" way, why don''t you just re-create your models/map files in TrueVision or 3DS Max? They might be expensive, but there is still [cough]KaZaA[cough]...

With trueVision you would be able to directly export your model/map to .X files. And the .3DS files Max Creates can also easily converted to .X files with the program that comes with the DirectX SDK. (or search for a tutorial on how to directly read a 3DS files )

And to convert a X-file shouldnt be that big of a problem...

i hope this helped you in a way..

Ones again... life goes on...

Less of that.

Andre, here's the document -=Code=- was talking about. Really excellent description of how to sort out a Worldcraft .map file. I'll be using it myself shortly to write a parser. There's also some source code at his site for a similar tool that stores polygons in his own file format.
