I am considering buying ''Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus'' as my first game programming book. I''ve read a bit about it and know that it teaches directX 6.0 I know that directX is backwards compatible, but what I want to know is, Does it matter what version you learn directX from? Are the differences in versions a lot? ( I mean between version 6 and 8) For example, if I learned from version 6, would I have the knowledge to use version 8? Any help would be great!

The difference is quite huge, because I think D3D6 was using DirectDraw4...

I think the difference between DX7 and DX8 is also very big and I''m sure the difference between 6 and 8 will be even larger.

DX8 merged the 2D and 3D graphics modules into one, and that changed the way you implement 2D graphics quite a bit.
However the differences between 6 and 7 would certainly be smaller.

If your looking to use 8, get another book. If your looking to use 6 or 7, that book is probably a good buy.
(plenty of people still use 7 for 2D)

The difference make no difference. Beacause after you will be able to read tutorials on this site and be able to convert them like 1 2 3. You dont have to learn a book whit directdraw 7.0 event if there is some out there. If that book cover what oyu want then i say buy it.
