Warhammer or Warhammer 40,000 would both be really interesting to play around with.

(where sauron actually took on
a tangible form)
I believe I delivered a pretty strong case in the other thread that Sauron actually has a physical shape at the time of WOTR. At least, Tolkien believed it to be so.

Well, it wasn''t called the Last Alliance of Men and Elves for nothing.

yet in the second war they just sat on the sidelines! what a
bunch of chumps!
They didn''t exactly sit on the sidelines - there just weren''t all that many elvish habitations left. Both Lothlorien and Thranduil''s realm in northern Mirkwood was attacked by Sauron''s forces.
For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can''t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don''t remain stone- written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command or faith a dictum. I am my own God. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us -- Charles Bukowski

As I recall, there was supposed to have been a battle in the Iron Hills between the dwarves and one of Sauron''s armies - if that one had gone Sauron''s way, then Minas Tirith would have fallen...
If you look at the War of the Ring, the free peoples essentially just fought a series of defensive engagements - at least until their last, suicidal gambit. The whole plan of engagement was centered around avoiding a single major confrontation that they did not have the military power to win, and istead distracting Sauron''s attention from the Fellowship as long as possible...
A strategy like that only works if the Dark player doesn''t know about it - if Sauron had realised that the Fellowship sought, not to use the ring, but to destroy it, then he would have won. The Last Alliance, as I recall, was the only direct military confrontation between the massed armies of the free peoples and the assembled forces of Sauron. While you could probably put something together along RTS lines, I''m deeply sceptical that you could recapture the War of the Ring in sufficient detail... First Age, you''d also have to allow for the possibility of divine intervention...
Oh, and the Ents had two unit types - Ents and Huorns![](smile.gif)

and it would have been suicide, had the ring not been destroyed
at the precise moment it did. come to think about it, the entire
book revolves around seeking your destiny and stuff, how would
the actual ring come into play in an RTS. whoever has the ring
is essentially unstoppable, and if things go according to the book
then you already know who wins. Maybe you can choose mordor as your
territory, and one of the final campaigns is to stop frodo/sam/gollum?
sounds easy since you know where they''re headed :\
it''ll be interesting to see how the game thats in production pulls it
off

I am not thinking about a very specific RTS with a ring and all, I''m thinking more generalized. I would wright up a very basic thing on how I would go about race balancing, but I don''t have much time today. I''ll try to get to it tomorrow (note im elendil)

I think a setting in the First or Second Age would be ideal for a traditional RTS. Or you could go for the Fourth Age. Pit Gondor against the Easterlings and Southrons.
Another idea would be to make it more tactical. Give the player a small squad or army with very specific goals, like delay the enemy long enough for the defenses to be prepared. That way you get into some detail not directly referenced in the books, but you can still follow the general storyline.

I think that First and Second Age would be great for RTS-thanks Naaga. Anyone know any resources on that WOTR game? I haven''t seen much info on it, and I would like to know my competition
. I had a whole thing with the races and the kingdoms, but I got a HTTP 500 error and it deleted my post :0. That always has to happen when you type long long posts...

There''s a table-top wargame/strategy game called "War of the Ring" out there, which pits the fellowship player against the dark lord player. At its most basic, both sides just move a limited number of "heroes" around, and the game primarily revolves around the dark player trying to identify the various face down fellowhip tokens on the map - hobbits are just hobbits to him, but any other characters are immediately identified if spotted. Also it''s possible for two characters to fight. In order to keep the Dark Lord from just fortifying Mount Doom, none of his characters are allowed to sit there... The advanced version also incorporates the armies of both sides with an approximate reinforcement schedule, and some conditions for mobilisation - like one of a handful of characters visiting Edoras before Rohan begins to mobilise. There''s also a three player option where one player takes the part of Saruman. It''s been a few years since I last played it, so I can''t remember the details...

sounds easy since you know where they're headed :
On Warcraft 3 and starcraft, i like to play the UMS maps that are based on real events. For example, I play a ww2 map and invade from africa into the southern side of France. It really funny becuase the axis ALWAYS thinks ur gonna attack normandy.
Anyways, a cool concept for an RTS would be the outcomes and decisions made for each mission would effectivley alter the storyline. For example, gollum sam and frodo have a fight with the defenders of gondor when they are captured for that breif bit in the Two Towers, Gondor kills them and Eomir takes the ring. He of course decides to use the ring on mordor, the next mission perhaps you would have to attack and destroy the forces still loyal to Eomir and retake the ring. Its this kind of freedom that most RTS games lack.
-edit- sorry i have no idea what the name of the prince of gondor is

Hehe nice idea but I don''t think you''ve read the books
. Thanks though. That''s a good idea.
I have been reading The Silmarrillion lately, and I think that it would be really cool to get the license and make a game called The Silmarrillion . Fat chance. What''s kind of cool is that I saw this site a little bit ago called WildFire Games that is making something called The Last Alliance. The funny thing is that they use names like Mordyr and Condyr to get past the copyright laws. I think that it would be a good idea to do that, and have one of the developers anonymously make a hack that changes the names to their regular state.
